Mobile Phone Coverage

This may have been covered before but is there Telstra coverage on any parts of the Overland Track?

You generally get coverage when sitting on top of mountains. The first time I went to Thetis mobile phones were fairly new (especially to me) and my son and his friend were sitting there talking to their families and friends. Also on Ossa, Massif, etc etc. Most high points in fact. Not so sure about the OT itself.

The forum search tool is also very good, you can try asking it your questions if you think they may be covered, as there is already a wealth of information here on this forum.

If you are with Optus (like me), count on there not being any coverage at any time on the OT. You might find the odd pockets close to Lake St. Claire other than that nada.

Just finished OT, only had obvious Telstra 3G at narcissus. But admittedly didn't try anywhere else.

I've had reception on most summits, definitely on Cradle, Ossa, Thetis, Pelion East and West, Oakleigh, and even at Pelion Gap. I also had good reception at Narcissus. It often depends on weather as well. I get much better reception on cloudy days. I'm not sure if there is any reason why that is, but I wont complain!

Ok, to be more constructive, here is the map I found at the Vodafone website - I went looking out of curiosity.
Yellow = Standard coverage, calls and text.
Orange = National roaming coverage.

Howdy guys,

Walked into the walls today with my Brother (thomas) and a mate.

We got coverage in the following locations...all 3 phones.

The phones were and Iphone 3, Blackberry Bold and Blackberry Torch 9800
Reception just past trappers - 1 bar but hit and miss.
Reception between trappers and Lake Adelaide turn off - 1 bar hit and miss
Damascus's gate - 1 bar
THe Temple and half way up - 3-5 bar full service.

We were able to make calls and send pics...

2 more Telstra locations in the North of the park are;
Bluff Cirque / Rodway Junction (2 bars through to Mt Claude)
Heading South of Lake Will Junction up to & Including Windermere Lookout (full signal strength to the West Coast)

I'm a fan of the Lake will reception patch, just after the turn off.

Everywhere I turned my phone on, I got Telstra 3g coverage.

Those places were:
Ossa, and the descent right down to, and including Pelion Gap,
Mt. Oakleigh, across the entire summit plateau,
The Acropolis, from the plateau halfway up, and all the way to the summit,
Echo Point.

Not actually on Telstra, on Three, but they roam onto Telstra 3G, so same difference.
