Blue Peaks Track Coordinates?

Postby taswalker2011 » Mon 28 Nov, 2011 10:46 am

Hi all,
On the weekend i went on a friends notes and attempted to walk the Blue Peaks Track near MCkenzie. Found the track near the concrete slab and headed along it for about 500m before loosing the track. Had to give up on this occasion :( Any experienced walkers have any advice or even better, the GPS coordinates for the track.
Cheers in advance. TW

Sorry, I don't have any specific advice about how to find the track, but did want to mention that the track gets even more vague and difficult to follow once higher up and out of the vegetation. There are also little to no land marks to help with navigation. A very tricky area sometimes.

There's a little more on the difficulties of following this track, and some tips for finding it this old topic. That topic also includes a post recommending that people don't go there without somebody who is familiar with it. Although I wouldn't go that far, I would say that you should expect to lose the track if you haven't been there before, as even those who've done the track multiple times often end up going by slightly different routes each time.

I've got a picture, does that help? :D

That's from the lookout on the pipeline track. Haven't been up there, so can't help with the track...

That's a shame. Finding the start is usually half the battle! From memory it's pretty well defined from there on the short climb through bush until you get to the creek. After crossing the creek to the western side the track braids a bit but I found that staying close to the vegetation on the western side of the clearing and continuing south, you generally pick it up again ok. Once you reach a bit of a rocky outcrop there is a clear track up it and then there is a cairned section. The country opens up after that and you can see the Blue peaks "range" which you keep to your right. If you are going onto the lakes, just keep the peaks to your right and soon enough you will have Middle lake come into view. The peak summit can be seen from the track although I have never climbed it.
SOB is right though, there are few landmarks until you get to the lakes and the area is prone to fog so a GPS or someone who has been there before would be useful.

Yes its the Tarkine - from the pipeline track lookout as noted at the bottom of the pic.

If you search for the topic on the Spot 2 messenger I think you will find an image there of the gps points taken on that trip. You may be able to workout exactly where photohiker took the image from that.

Edit: Found it

I just realised that we are talking about two different blue peaks, and my photo is not of the one this topic is about.

Sorry for the diversion!

Thanks for the help everyone, if we finally get some better weather in the coming weekends ill have another crack at it. The ground was very wet last time which i dont think helped at all in finding the track. Cheers

Mid February. I'm thinking of heading straight down the West Coast, redoing Murchy on the first day and spending a couple of days trying to get up Jukes, then I'll be knocking on your door. I reckon that circuit will be a good way to finish of the visit.
Depending on the weather, that is . . .

How was the kayaking? do you dive from that thing?

FB. Blecch. :x I did what you suggested and joined up just so I could see your photos, and now I have all these idiots I've never heard of and wouldn't know from your average bar of soap wanting to 'friend' me. That place is just weird.

Which reminds me, I may be getting my dive gear out of mothballs this summer, and bringing it down to Tassie.
