TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Gaiters - What are the most bomb proof?

Wed 09 Nov, 2011 9:14 am

Hi all,

After destroying a brand new pair of Sea to Summit Quagmire gaiters in just 10 days from brand new, I am interested to know what experiences others may have had with gaiters.

Looking for something that will handle tough scrub, rivers and rock!

Cheers, Erin

I've been using One Planet RFG's for a while now. They haven't encountered anything too harsh, but for the amount of wear they have had they look remarkably good. Also more comfortable and better sealing around the boot than my old Quagies, which is the main reason I like them.

I would have a bit of a search of the forum, there are a couple of ongoing threads on this topic.

There is lots as most of us do not have a stand out gaiter. I have got a pair of Cactus ones from NZ that I am about to press into service. Muck better weight of canvas than the local offerings. Anybody else had experience with these??

Macpac's new Torre Gaiter (built with Tassie Bushwalkers feedback in mind) will be in stores in around 3 weeks time ;)
12oz HC Aztec canvas and a layer of 1000d and a layer of 500d cordura, everything at least double stitched with heavy thread...may be worth the wait?

Sounds interesting. Any chance of some more details? I.e:

Closure method and location?
Top velcro or shock cord?
Instep strap or wire, and included or separate?
Price?

Sounds good. Front or rear closure?

Hi

I have tried quite a few pairs and the winner to-date is the One Planet ones. Sea to Summit generally fail because they use a hard material and soft so the flexing does in the stitching and/or the softer material. Wilderness Equipment are a great boot covering design but the S type fitting for the shock cord are a disaster as very little stitching holding them together. They do make a slightly different approach with a nylon tab (as they originally did) and that is better. Found with them dumping the shock cord for MacPac wire straps worthwhile but go for the small wire straps. Heck, I wear size 49 boots and even the small wire under-strap is a bit on the big size.

For comfort OP get the nod as well. Thing to be aware off is they are designed to sit higher on the boot. Apparently, the reason for that is most boots nowadays have the tongue sealed where in the older boots the tongue was not sealed so the older gaiters were designed to seal lower on the boot. Found that the OP work well in keeping water out in a quick creek splash.

I much prefer canvas over other materials. Friend found nylon ones way too sweaty.

Cheers

Looks just like the old one.... and still has that stupid press stud that never stays done up.
When are they going to release that thing at the bottom is useless.
The Velcro never pulls apart so why bother.

Also no strap, when you put split ring wire cable on it the rings separate and then you end up tearing a hole in your gaiter.

90 bucks for gaiters and you still have to make yourself an underboot strap...

my vote goes to the Outdoor Research Expedition Crocs.
I havnt tried too many gaitors out there on the market so cant really compare, but have survived multiple crampon attacks and have not torn.

Not to mention the plastic clip. Plastic is always a worry.

How odd...

These were originally advertised on the website for $80.95/pair, but this seems to have been dropped to $67.45/pair. I wonder why?
