Tassie's best Day Walks

Hi all,

A mate and my good self are heading off to Tassie in Jan. He's no longer prepared to do overnight walks so it's day walks only.

Could some of you informative people give me some nice, moderate to challenging day walks.

I've done a nice one in Mt Field and on Maria Island plus Freycinet. I'd like to do a mountain walk or two and a nice coastal walk.

Cradle Mountain, if you don't mind crowds. You could do the Cradle Circuit.

Looking into Hartz Mountain, Cape Raoul, Walls Of J.

Cathedral Rock is near Hobart and will give you some nice views (4hrs or less i think);
Mt Wellington from Lenah Valley Rd, up the Old Hobartion track via Lost World (5hrs) - I recommend it;
Do Hartz and Mt Snowy in a loop (5hrs? - someone help me out, I can't remember);
Mt Field East is peaceful (4-5hrs).

Give them a go maybe.

Mt Anne is one of the best going, but you need to pick your weather. Takes about 8-9 hours. Pretty steady climb, but then its relatively flat across to the summit tower.

Adamson's Peak is another fairly challenging walk, with great views of southern Tas. About 7 hours return.

Hartz is a really nice walk - I recommend it. A fairly casual 3-4 hours for that one, or as has been suggested, include Mt Snowy and add a couple of hours.

Collins Bonnet is another relatively easy, though satisfying, Mt Wellington area walk.

Cape Raoul is also a good day trip.

Thanks for the feedback so far, I'll look into those. BTW I've done the Mt Anne circuit and the Overland. I'd like to head to the SW so Hartz Mountain is looking good, so is Cape Raoul, I'll further investigate the other ones.

Narwantapu national park provides some really nice long or short day walks including one of the best coastal traverse walks in Tasmania I believe

Mt Jerusalem has fantastic views and you walk through walls of Jerusalem to get there so the sceneray is great on the way
Chapmans 'Day Walks Tasmania' lists it as a 9.5hr walk (24km). My son and I did it yesterday (in 6:20) and had a great time.
You can climb Solomons throne as well (or instead) if you want a longer (or shorter) day walk in WOJ.

Cape Huay or Cape Raoul are both great coastal walks.

Really nice walk ,may be a bit too long as a day walk back to the car but I suspect you meant from Pelion Hut and back.

Thanks everyone. So many choices.......I'll be doing a coastal walk for sure and the rest depends on logistics and figuring out what my mate is prepared to do; he's a bit of a wimp these days but then again, I'm not in the best of shape either.

You did ask for "challenging" walks and some of those suggested are very challenging. I suspect those who do Mt Ossa as a day-walk (from Arm River) actually run some of the way, although it could be done as a walk if you start early enough.

Well in fact I asked for moderate to challenging, but anyways, I have a good few to pick from.

No I did mean from the carpark. It makes for a long day but quite doable and very satisfying.

I do not disagree with you however I think you need to be fit to do this as a day walk and for most to cover this distance I stick by my observation that I believe it it too long at around 38km with the rise and fall , especially for the occasional inexperienced walker like many asking for advice on this forum

Most don't want to rush through such a beautifull area.

IMO rinadeena falls and the walk up to long tarns is one of the best day walks going around, the myrtle forest is really nice. While either mt murchison or tyndall on the west coast are great mountain walks

Quick trip report.

Cape Raoul - Fantastic coastal scenery

Mt Field East - Nothing special

Hartz Mountain - Beautiful walk but very very windy so didn't head over to Mt Snowy

Mt Ruffus circuit - Beautiful walk , great views

Mt Jerusalem - Awesome views

Freycinet beach circuit and Mt Amos- Nice, but done it before in better weather

I'll be back a 7th time, might have to don the overnight pack next time.
