hartz in the snow tommorrow anyone?

Tue 10 Jan, 2012 5:26 pm

Hay all just wondering if im being to ridiculous wanting to do the little 3-5 hour hartz greatwalk tommorrow with there expected snowfall. Theres a few things that i can see may stop me. 1 i havent seen snow as an adult and i may just run around squeeling makeing angels and snowmem instead of walking. 2. I will be driveing a yaris? Little grandma car with no snow chains. 3. Im relatively inexperienced ive only done a handfull of greatwalk day walks and bone in the snow. 4. It sounds like i may loose the track unable to see it with the snow. Im 27 male and stupid so the falling on my head thing doesnt worry me to much its the getting lost so if i ever do end up off track i just go back to the track with no track to go back to. . . . . I dont know what to do hehehe

anyways feel free to talk me out of it but i think i can do it regardless i have a snow jacket waterproof overpants good boots good socks good packs im sure theres a pair of gloves somewhere beanies scarves and im just generally sensible and calculate risks at given situations. Theres a large dresser draw which is just screaming for me to screw some pipe onto the bottom to make a sled hahaha ill name it plan b and bring a stuffed tiger with me if i feel its time to escape

It's a good track up to Hartz, and I doubt the snow will be heavy enough to close the road, you'll probably be fine!! Have fun!!

yea.. I reckon you'll be fine. Most likely any snow will have melted by mid morning.

I think some lady wrote a good few guides on the huon trails but I cant figure out how to get her google maps waypoint markers to stick. all good tho ive got the regeion cached away. might whip into a hardware store and pick up a compass aswell snow snow snow snow snow snow!! :D

well that was fun enough :D snow was pretty full on. may need gloves and balaclava next time and some eyewear hahaha at the end of the track tho of hartz peak. is it just where your inbetween that tiny peak on your left and slightly larger peak on your right? keep in mind visability was 20metres at best. I was expecting a sign or a post or shelter or something. I ended up trying to walk around and whatnot but couldnt find anything at all apart from a huge cliff edge and just a wall of grey.

They are called contours. However....

Maybe right, but it's Hartz peak, no one could ever get lost up there!!!

there is a half sided cairn on the summit which you would recognise. I suspect you only went as far as Hartz Pass.

Cairn? Isn't there a low three sided shelter up there?

Re: hartz in the snow tommorrow anyone?

Wed 11 Jan, 2012 7:49 pm

Im guessing it used to be a large cairn like the one on field east. Most of it removed leaving just a sided wall or 2....

It definitely had three sides last time I left the place.
)OK, so I spent at least an hour building up one of the sides so I had somewhere to shelter from the wind . . . )

Hard to imagine where you ended up.

This is a shot from the top looking back down the track. It comes up from a saddle behind the ridge on the RHS and works its way past that small peak you can see where I start to show the track and heads over the scree slope as shown.
HartzTrack3965.JPG
Hartz track as seen from the top. It is a rockier and steeper scree between this view and the top

And this is the start of the descent with the top just out of view to the right. Track goes around behind that huge cairn you can see.
Maybe you got to this point here.

Starting to descend - just a few metres from the top.

As i said earlier, i suspect he got to hartz pass and tried to keep going straight rathen than hang a left towards the peak.

Let him answer ILUV.
Have you been past the saddle and kept going straight on?
No big cliff faces any where there - just an overgrown scrubby track down to Lake Hartz.
It is his mention of a large cliff face that makes me think he got high up on the main ridge somewhere, and the notch right near the top might fit the bill.
Not impossible that he worked up onto the Devils Backbone though?

Now you're playing 'where was he?' eggs, you are unstoppable

Re: hartz in the snow tommorrow anyone?

Well thats my guess anyway... not many other places he could have been!! and for a newcomer to the bushwalking game, the rocks near Hartz might be considered "cliffs"...?

Lol SBS.....

I was so close :,( less then 10metres away i went straight instead of climbing up on right. Had to go back to make sure. Image this is photo i took standing next to the big hollowed out cairn at the top on australia day. And im pointing to where i was in the last two photos hahaha very annoying.
