hmmm.. They must of changed the passes because mine is just a piece of paper with holes punched in it, stuck to the window...
The staff at service tas just write the details on it with a permanent marker.

It would be pretty special technology that can read that successfully through a car windows in the rain in the middle of the night.

That's what I assumed but the carpark wasn't even close to full. Also assumed the technology was like the e-tag things they use on the freeways in Melbourne. Mrs sbs has the car at the mo so can't check the sticker. V. mysterious

can anyone tell me if the road to cradle mountain is open all night?
ie; someone told me the gates are automated and open to cars with their park pass, can anyone confirm this? i want to get down there at night to do some astro photography.

I have been in many time at between 2AM and 4AM (last time was back in September) and never had a problem. You just have to drive very slowly and be very watchful for wildlife.

The shuttle bus is great, except later in the day when they don't run so close together and you have tired kids. Must admit the drivers didn't seem to take into account that private vehicles would be less familiar with the road and may not even be familiar with Australian road rules(o'seas tourists).
It's good to do the drive slowly in your own at night without the traffic and the opportunity to see some great wildlife. The shuttle bus goes out on a guided tour at night for extra cost.

Not sure if the system has changed since I was fooled by a "Carpark Full" sign (maybe 18 months ago). I presumed that the boom-gate wouldn't open and returned to the Visitors' Centre but as I really needed to drive to Dove Lake went in to plead my case. They told me to just ignore the sign and to drive up to the boom gate and it would open. No misinformation there - they were right :D
