I resemble that remark (when I'm fit...). Even when I'm fit I'm still at a bmi of around 27 (usually about 97 kgs @ 188cms). For me to reach bmi of the top end of "normal" (ie: 24, or 85kgs) I'd need to look like a POW.

If I did weights I could easily be in the bottom end of the obese BMI range and still be fit. It would just take being fit, and adding about 3kg of muscle. I have skinny arms so it wouldn't be that impossible.

BMI really trips up on fit people with relatively low body fat.

At best, it's just a US population based measure. That's it. It is used as a screening tool by the health community to flag if a client may be outside the normal range.

There are other methods, some where you measure the diameter of your wrist and the length of your femur or something like that. If you want to get extreme there's the submersion weight test and the skin fold test etc.

Mostly an honest self appraisal in the mirror will tell you if you are carrying too much fat. Hint: If you can't see your toes, it's probably not muscle in the way

Probably preaching to the converted here but:

Nope, but I have taken my mountain bike up to the saddle of Betts Hill/Cathedral Rock - good fun coming back down!

For us metric folks -

BMI = Weight in Kg/(height in metres)^2 so I just make the fatty brigade.... 108kg/1.89*1.89=30.2! I know I am not fit....too much desk work over the last few years.

I would have to lose 20kg to be "normal"!
Cheers - Phil

Given this thread has had a revival, I am moved to comment that for a certain proportion of the population, an inability to see one's toes is related to the presence of mammalian ellipses, which admittedly are not muscle but neither are they necessarily due to carrying too much fat. :P
This makes me the first man to climb Mount Everest backwards, without oxygen...or even a jumper.

If it's real, they were choppered in.
The chap in the Hawthorn jumper is Robert DiPierdomenico.
I remember the ad as well, but never watch the show.
will travel to some of the most spectacular and remote locations in Australia, with the back drops – including the East Kimberley, Whitsundays, South West Tasmania and Victoria’s high country

I only knew it was him because I have followed AFL since it was VFL. He sure got chunky!
