Overnighter in South West.

Hi all. Well i'm very glad to be back living in Tas and amongst the wilderness. I am planning an overnighter in the south west, ideas so far are ; Scotts Peak to Lake Cygnus or Mt Picton or Mt Hopetoun. Any ideas on favorites? I am relatively fit, have done Mt Anne, Main range (kosiosco) amongst others and well equipped. Any suggestions would be much appreciated , regards , Iain

Hopetoun is very different with a steep and scrubby offtrack section, Lake Sydney would be a better option in that area. Best go for Cygnus or Picton, although Picton can be done as a daywalk relatively easily.

The Snowy Range would also make a nice o/nighter with a camp below Nevada Peak.

Hopetoun may be a bit hopeful, you would want a bit of company in the scrub!!
Other options could be Mt Wright and Stepped Hill, an overnighter to Lake Rhona or an overnight trip to Mt Weld.

Cheers for the suggestions. So Hopetoun is out , thankyou, but more chioces now. Weld has always interested me. I have a Tasmap of Weld, tho no track is marked. I assume track starts from the end of South Weld Rd? for Nevada peak and the Snowy Ranges is access via the forestry roads? Cheers again

Not quite the end. There are some descriptions on the site for this trip. The track peters out on a flat area a bit before the upper lake, which makes a nice camp site.

Sth Pictons is also fantastic with the walk starting a cpl hundred metres from the Picton track. Adamsons, Sthn Ranges(Pigsty or Moores Garden return), Schnells Ridge, Mt Shakespeare, Mt Field lots of options

Thanks for all the suggestions. You're right , there are lots of options. With about 5 maps in front of me , it's down to Snowy Range and Weld. Have to make decision before morning . Cheers again.

A copy of The Abels volume 2 is extremely handy to own as it has great track notes on a lot of the major peaks. If you haven't got one already that is !!!

Thanks again for all the advice. Ended up choosing Snowy Range with the idea of camping at Snowdrift Tarns. But the weather wasn't playing ball and after a few hours on the plateau, returned down and out. On a side note, with a spare day decided to do some scrambling on Mt Wellington. Stumbled on a weak and occasionally tagged pad at the foot of the Organ Pipes, and it leads you up a gully to the summit. Great views of the Organ pipes, and a challenge. Highly recommended little (hour n half from the chateau) climb , with care. Again thanks for the advice, iain.

Bad luck with the weather, mate. I did the Picton circuit over three days, starting Monday and, bar a short squall between Chapman and Abrotanella, had pretty good conditions.
Nice to know that, for once, I made the right decision and got better conditions than someone else.
The Bobs/Boomerang trip, however, goes down as a 'fail'.

And Picton was on my short list!! I did start sunday, think the weather got better from monday on , dohhh!!
