Woman helicoptered out of WoJ

Wed 21 Mar, 2012 11:27 pm

On the way to the movies tonight, ABC radio news was concerning - "Efforts are continuing to reach a 48 y.o. woman , injured in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park"
On the way home, things sounded better - "Woman winched to safety from Walls of Jerusalem National Park, with broken leg. Difficulty in access due to weather, difficulty in finding her, no life-threatening injuries"

Apparently her partner had to walk out from Lake Meston to Mole Creek to raise the alarm! Must not have been on NextG.

Lol, big day for the chopper!

5 winched on Anne, that's epic!
They attempted to leave the area by descending to Lake Judd and found they couldn’t negotiate the thick bush.

Really? WT *$&#?

Can understand the difficulty based on my recent experience of walks in Tasmania this year. To navigate the thick scrub is not fun at all. Lost again the fit-over glasses

Quite interesting reading although some lack detail. The last few days aren't up yet.

Why on earth would a group descend from the notch to Lake Judd? Did they have an argument and somebody tossed the car keys down the slope in a fit of pique? We're they trying to do the "descend, sidle, scramble" to avoid climbing the notch but they got carried away on the "descend" part? If they didn't want to climb the notch why the $%^#% didn't they just go back the way they came?

Okay, I know we don't have the details, but this really does have "d'oh" written all over it.

Busy week for the chopper indeed.

Hi

Thanks for the link to the rescue site.

Having first hand knowledge of one event it is interesting to see how it was reported which was correct.

I would love to see a percentage break down of locals versus visitors rescued. Have a sneaking feeling visitors would make up a significantly higher percentage. Trouble is it is a value judgement what is an unacceptable use of the rescue services, what is an acceptable use but what the heck were they thinking, and ok it could have happened to anyone.

The first one needs serious examination while the second one might indicate that an education issue exists. But at the moment Parks have their collective heads buried in a peat big with the only thing they do is put up another sign. Does Parks do incident debriefing of near misses to see what else can be done or do they wash their hands of such events?

Cheers

If my reading is correct the group dropped from the Notch directly down to Lake Judd.

If this is correct why? What were they thinking of achieving down at the Lake?

If a scrub bash along the shore was planned and given up upon why not go back up to the Notch and back the way they came in?

Or am I being naive?

Yes I have done the circuit, no I have not been down the Lake from the Notch.

No-one in their right mind would.

Just a thought - it might have fogged out, gotten close to dark, and they might have panicked and headed for the nearest known point that they couldn't miss - ie: the lake.

Still, the "WT *$&#?" stands for the time being.

That all said a pack raft trip across Lake Judd to the base of and a climb up to the Notch was tossed about over a couple of beers a while back.
