I use scans of paper maps in Bit Map. A bit fiddly to calibrate but for maps I already own, getting them on the iPhone is free.

That would be ideal nik, i have some older maps with interesting detail. Will you drop by and give me a tute

tbh though, even the base map and satellite image on gpskit might be enough for how i would use them.
Somehow they have developed a radar feature that will track others using the same app And send messages between
the my mind boggles

It is, but I think it no longer has the option to purchase the maps. It works for those of us that bought them before apple put a stop to it. I got in and bought three states worth of 1:25000 and all the marine charts just in time.

I can still purchase maps for it. You running the free or paid app? Android or iOS?
Actually $89.99 USD for a state.

iOS. It still works for android.
If you don't upgrade to the latest version of memory map you can still use the map store.

I haven't tried actually clicking the final pay button, but I can access the store etc and enter credit card details from my 4s running latest software.

Kool that's great! What version of memory map are you using?
I'm on 1.5.4, which no longer has the shop.
