Road closures in Kosciuszko

Mon 02 Apr, 2012 6:06 pm

Hi all,

This could go in the NSW section but I wanted to make sure others planning trips in Kosciuszko over easter are aware of the road closure at Cabramurra. :(

At this stage I understand the road is closed between Khancoban and at Cabramurra due to landslides; I found this out the hard way and had to shift a walk at the last minute, well actually at the locked gate. After speaking with NSWPWS we were advised that the road is closed at Khancoban although other reports suggest you may be able to get into Tooma.

*&%$#!!
Elliot Way is still open, though, I assume? As long as I can get to Cabramurra that way I can still get to Kiandra tomorrow night.

Thank you.

The ranger I talked to on Friday said that the road had two sections with very bad washouts. It's not just a matter of patching things up, those two sections will have to be completely rebuilt. So it's unlikely the road will be open again before next summer . . .

The road closures are no big deal for portage... put on a pair of Classic Dunlop Volleys on your rear pannier rack for the creek crossings. If you're any good, you could ride your pushy over that log at Ogilvies, no worries ... mono.

Warren, this assumes the road remains open and they don't re close it at Cabramurra!!! Long portage otherwise.

I would not be surprised if NPWS close the road again for litigious safety reasons i.e people hoon along the road and the fear may be that they miss the barriers then try and take legal action.

I notice that the blanket RTA Live Traffic and the Snowy River Shire advised road conditions, don't necessarily marry with what National Parks have said, over the last two weeks.

Zac, I'm a push-bike rider. Closed roads are for motor vehicles. No portage is more than a creek width, or boxing around a land slip or washout, usually. I got sick and tired of the roads being closed every second time I wanted to go anywhere, along the Divide. Especially over the last few years with so much rain, so I swapped my car for my bike. I ride my push bike most places nowadays to go bushwalking. In NSW and the ACT I have no trouble pushing or carrying my bike on walking tracks. Even when I tell Park Rangers that I'm touring on a push bike and want to do the walking track, I'm often told just to take it easy, if there is no one around. I'm not a mountain biker, I'm an off-road tourer, a totally different breed of crazy. It has been a good move not using my car and doing just a handful of kilometres a day in the bush on the bike, some days, makes for the proverbial, a great day at the office.

Warren.
