Easiest Walk

Sun 28 Dec, 2008 5:28 pm

For a first overnight walk with a child, in a couple of weeks, I'm considering the following:

Arm River Track (Pelion Camping Area, or the one closer to the Mersey Valley if the first ascent was too steep for little people)
Lee's Paddock
Walls of Jerusalem- the first camping site.

I might go for 2 nights, and we'll probably walk into Pine Valley first to test gear and see how Laura (the child) goes for it.

Anyhow, which of those walks would be the easiest/most rewarding? I was thinking Lee's Paddock, but is the Arm River track that much harder?

Any other recommendations in this (the Sheffield) area?

Thanks!

Lees Paddocks is much shorter, and much flatter than Arm River track (2.5 hours almost dead flat vs 4+ hours including a long steep section). Both go through great territory, but the scenery is very different on each. If unsure of the child's tolerance and ability, I'd choose Lees Paddocks I think.

Sage advice Nik- that's conclusion I'd come to as well.

Thanks!

Hi
We did a walk into Lee's Paddocks with 2 kids and they ran nearly all the way and were still full of energy when when walked back out.

You should have got them to carry more of your gear! ;-)

If you're heading into Lees paddocks....it's worthwhile checking out Lewis Falls...just a shortish deviation. The last time I was there it was quite thunderous and speccy. I haven't been to Oxley Falls which is further up .....map says it's about 120m from the main track.
Hope you all have a great trip.

Both are well worth the deviation, although from memory there's nothing to indicate where to turn off the track for Oxley. Oxley falls are great because you can get quite close to them, although this might be a little dangerous with kids. Either way it was worth a look when I was there a couple of years ago:

This is great guys- I think we'll go for 2 nights, after New Years hopefully it will quiet down a bit.

She should go OK and there won't be hardly, if any water on the track.
We had a minor mishap with the youngest child running along and slipping in a rather deep-muddy puddle.
