Running Repairs- What to take.

Sun 04 Jan, 2009 9:06 pm

Have read a few interesting threads that touched on the running repairs issue. Was wondering what others take to do running repairs if any and I'd be interested in hearing about some examples of "on track ingenuity" like Corvus' last entry in " My Tassie Gear List Under 6kg....." Steve C

I usually have a couple of things for repairs stashed in my pack-
-a length of dental floss for sewing + needle
-pieces of duct tape for patching
-string
-small pieces of wire

For me it's just
  • sharp knife
  • string
  • safety pins
Other items in my kit (especially in the first aid kit) could potentially be used for repairs of some sorts.

My enflatable sleeping mat came with a repair kit of a few spare bits of material, glue etc, so that goes along. It would probably do for a tent, pack or sleeping bag too. The other thing I take is a tube of two part epoxy. This stuff will stick just about anything, and would weigh in at around 50g. I had an experience of a boot sole coming off at the wrong end of the Picton Range a few years ago, and the epoxy would have helped there. Still, I'll have it next time!

The needle and strong thread are a good idea. I might add them too.

To add to items already mentioned, I carry a 5 gram tube of Super Glue. It has repaired a cracked pack buckle for me in the bush, and would no doubt be useful for other "spot" repairs.

I've used sports strapping tape for semi-permanent boot repairs - sticks much better than gaffa tape and is very durable.

I take waterproof 'Gaffa' style (with the fabric in it) tape rather than duct tape . I find it stronger, less stretchy and the water has no effect on it. I repaired my sailing dinghy's hull last year and despite abuse and being submerged often it's as good as new! Also take some cord. I must put a needle and thread in too - I used carry it but the needle rusted heaps so I discarded it and never replaced it. Actually perhaps dental floss is the go, not thread!

I always take spare boot laces. Don't know why because I've never broken a lace on a walk. I've used the laces as string many times though. Like Nik I carry a selection of safety pins. I carry a needle on a short piece of cotton (for splinters), a roll of strapping tape, and usually the remnants of a roll of electricians tape or whatever plastic tape I have on hand.

I'm thinking I probably should add a mattress repair kit to my pack. I read the other day the DEET can be damaging to tent floors and inflatable mattresses. Bad news 'cause I've been spraying DEET to keep the leeches away.

Add to the list

- small tube of seam grip (tent repair, blown seam in boot, ripped shell, etc).
- sail repair tape (just a 5x10cm section), lighter, stickier and less stretch than gaffa.

In addition to usual needle&thread and adhesive fabric tape:
Enough tools to field strip and clean my Snow Peak (or Xtreme) gas stove. Total weight maybe 20 g, includes spare O-rings. Yes, I HAVE used the kit.
