Gear you take you don't need.

Just got me thinking about the gear I take and I will be taking my mini axe and my Saw when I get them, and I know I dont need them, but it's fun to have them, gives me something to do in camp

What do you take camping you don't need but you might need or just something you like to know is there, or something you take for no particular reason, WHAT THE HELL '

Down booties. It's my luxury for after pitching tent or making it to a hut. Very nice on battered feet. A usually take a book too. Although I put that in the necessary column because I have to read.

Robatman, I'm afraid that I'm not able to tell you much in terms of specifics. I bought them years ago. I cannot tell you how much they cost but they're Sea To Summit ones. They don't weigh too much but I consider them a luxury nonetheless, as I do try to be lightweight. The soles are quite hardy, I generally keep them on whilst walking around the hut or camp of an evening and they are yet to show any sign of wear in perhaps ten years. I have noticed that Rab have a pretty nice looking range too but probably more for expedition climbing.

You might find some for under $50 but you will have to be searching and patient.

I have some goosefeet ones in M50 with 25% extra fill + the shell booties. They are damn nice but not cheap.
When I got mine though I had an order in from another cottage vendore in the US, Ben just posted the booties to the other vendor for me for free. I only paid one small amount for postage then.

Arrowhead equipment sells booties that are a little less then the goosefeet but I'm a gram counter......

I have thought about this from time to time, that, once upon a time I went into the bush with the basic necessities...for nav I had a map and compass. Now I take a GPS too, and some spare batteries. I don’t really need that, but it’s nice to see my tracks in Google Earth. I used to take a basic point and shoot camera or no camera at all. Now I take an SLR with lenses, tripods and more batteries. I used to just take Micropur tablets for sterilisation of water. Now I have a fancy Steripen with filter AND even more batteries!
I don’t really need them but I don’t go on a multiday bushwalk without them...and the slr comes with me on most short walks too, but is not always used!
Oh, and I have never used the emergency reflective blanket thingy that I carry either...I think there was a thread about that somewhere on here once

Re Down booties

I have some from Feathered Friends. Again not cheap but dual purpose. They come with a sil-nylon outer cover with a stiff foam sole. The outer is water resistant, reinforced around the sole and side walls and quite OK to walk around a campsite in or around a hut. Take off the outer cover and you can just jump into a sleeping bag with down booties on. Very light, easily packable and not a luxury.

A couple things I take which are luxuries but worth the extra weight..my bushman hammock chair from Arrowhead equipment is something Im always glad I packed.

Depending on the length and destination of the trip, a hot water bottle can keep you cozy...I dont trust Nalgenes like some people use so I take a quality german made one.
Not ultra-light but not that heavy either for a 1-2 night trip.

Way too many light sources and batteries. Trouble is when I chuck the stuff out I wind up almost automatically "needing" on the next walk. Made the mistake of not taking camp shoes in a "lighter weight" push. Now tend to think, what the heck, stuff it in and put up with the weight.

I'm not sure if fleece would be the best fabric for booties, Colin. I could be wrong but I'd imagine that they'd get wet too easily.

Was thinking of making some booties out of the reflective stuff you use to put on your windscreen to reflect the heat off your car, the bubble stuff, I think would work well, at least to keep the heat in, should work well with some wool socks


Should be light as well, what do you think ???

Yeah - vapour barrier socks work amazingly well and can be just the trick to make the foot end of the sleeping bag really warm finally

I don't need my GPS, PLB, 1st aid kit, signaling mirror, spare line, spare tarp and warm clothing, extra food.
Basically all the stuff I carry just in case and hopefully will never need.
Think I'll chuck it all out!

I love that idea. Hmm, this thread is not going to help me to lose pack weight!

I would have to say a book isn't always necessary for a walk, and a lot of the time I find I don't actually read it! Having said that, there will always be a book in my pack. So I'd say that is my item.
