Bushwalking 'How To' Videos

Fri 03 Aug, 2012 4:40 pm

In the efforts of trying to encourage people to get out and enjoy the bush safely, I'm producing a bunch of 'How To' videos. I've popped the first one up here - I hope you like it!

Yes... this forum gets a plug in there too!

Cheers

Welcome to the forum!
Watched the video and was impressed with just how professional it was, may i suggest you create a short unique intro to your videos, just adds a personal touch and adds that x factor. As for the TP being a girly thing, I think anyone not taking some is a chop short of a barbecue.
Thats one more subscriber! Keep em coming.

Thanks Matt. Glad you like... I've known a few barbies short of a chop or two... (PS: I should confess that I'm a producer in my day job!).

Great video. I would be interested to know your baseweight though..

Thanks all. If you're in a club, please feel free to link to or embed to help newbies realise that it's not hard to jump from day walks to overnighters.

I'm just putting the finishing touches on the BASIC FOOD episode and have COLLECTING WATER, WATERPROOFING YOUR SLEEPING BAG and MAKING A COOKING FIRE in the can to be edited soon.

Hope you find them helpful.

Check the titles throughout that refer to the individual weights of some items, plus the total weight is on the screen towards the end.

Hey Caro, great video. I really think you should approach AG Outdoor to package them with their mags or maybe an outdoor retailer to get them on their site. I work at MD Katoomba so if you want contact details for their marketing department I'd be happy to pass them on. Something like that would be excellent on the website. You'd have to hack it with all MDs gear though so maybe pick your favourite.

While I definitely pack differently to you and see some problems with the way you pack I can appreciate that it's a system that works for you and I think it's great that you mentioned that at the beginning.

Cool to see another bush walking woman here. Do you walk with a club at all? I'm always looking for women to do midweek walks in the mountains. I imagine you work mon-fri but if you're interested, PM me.

(Dammit, can't figure out how to embed the vid here, sorry... any tips?)

Cheers
Lotsafreshair

To embed a youtube video you need to copy and paste the group of letters after the "?v=" and before the first "&" in between "youtube" tags. Using the above video for example. The whole URL is: "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwo7zyiH2Os&list=UU885b3fcSEShQdz6-v8KwLg&index=3&feature=plcp". You only need to paste the "zwo7zyiH2Os" bit in between the youtube tags. See code example below:

Code:
[youtube]zwo7zyiH2Os[/youtube]

The above code will give you this video:

Cheers,
Michael.

P.S. Great videos. Thanks for sharing. :D

Ah, that would be my sunnies CASE that had my non-sunnies glasses in it.

I was waiting for the continuity pedants to appear. You're going to just LOVE the "Food for overnight and extended trips". It's chock full of continuity blips. Maybe your penalty should be having to work free as Continuity on the next shoot?? :D

Thanks for the vid Lotsa. You manner is so welcoming, a pleasant change from some of the vids floating around on YouTube.

If you're targeting these videos to newbies, may I suggest condensing information into groups so as to make them easier to recall. I've written a bit of the theory below if you're interested, which I would have put in spoiler tags as I don't want to go OT too much, but I don't know if we've got them on this site?

An example from this vid might be breaking your pack down into, sleeping, clothing, safety and food; or weight distribution, access to safety gear, first in last out; or other various incarnations.

The idea behind this is that people can only store 7 items of information (give or take 2) in their short term memory, attention must be paid to these items to 'encode' them, so they can then be recalled at a later date. Too many items and we just forget things, so techniques need to be used to aid in the recall of long lists. For me this was standing in a store going 'there was something else I needed to get...' (even with a list! )

Breaking the multiple items into (semantic) groups is a technique referred to as 'chunking'. So 20 items say, becomes 4. So I may not remember that I need a sleeping bag, a mat, a liner, and ear plugs, along with 16 other items, but I may recall the category of 'sleeping gear'. Once I recall 'sleeping gear' I can work through the specific items in this category.

I hope that helps, your work is excellent, keep it up. And click that subscribe button people!

Hated the Americaisms in the dialogue but I'm an old fashioned type of bloke so that's my problem...otherwise pretty good.

Thanks for the encouraging words. Yep, I'm a member of a couple of clubs in Sydney and try to get out with them as often as poss. I travel for work quite a bit, so I'm not always around, but generally have good flexibility with days/hours. You made some good ideas BTW!

As a person that gets tired of packing to go away so often, it would have been easy to skip the video.....I'm glad I didn't.
Great polished production that would no doubt help lots of people getting into it.

The Pursuit is an awesome durable pack too, and all I need to do now is find out how you managed to get away with such a seemingly tiny food amount! I would have been sucking on a button after the first couple of hours!
