TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Backpacking 101: Wilderness Class with Andrew Skurka

Wed 12 Sep, 2012 5:33 am

Last month, in the Porcupine Mountains of Michigan’s pristine Upper Peninsula, I backpacked for three days with the master backpacker himself, Andrew Skurka. A National Geographic “Adventurer of the Year” as well as author of the stellar “The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide,” Skurka guides trips each year to introduce beginner and intermediate backpackers to the activity in real-world classrooms like Yosemite and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Funny, I was reading about his ski/hike/paddle around Alaska in Nat Geo just yesterday. Sounded like an incredible feat by an amazing bloke.
Would've been a very interesting three days Wayno. Can you tell us what he was like etc?

Alaska, That's one prime real estate so to speak. I watched a Documentary on Alaska yesterday, 9 hikers dumped in the middle of Alaska and had to survive for 30 days off the land. Beautiful scenery with lot's of wildlife, although they where not very good at catching the food and starved the whole 30 days.

Skurka would be great to hike with. I would love to chat with him, but I don't have that opportunity so the next best thing is to read his book and go out and learn for yourself.

I went searching for his book yesterday after reading this thread but it doesn't seem like it's stocked here in Australia by anyone so I've had to order it in.

Yes, that's the book.

Thanks 8)

Just ordered a copy from the link below for $15 with free postage. Seems a lot cheaper than via his website or Amazon.
