why did 10 people die on everest in 2012?

In the 16 years since Into Thin Air, Mount Everest has become safer in many ways, with better storm forecasting and amazing high-altitude rescue helicopters. So why did 10 people die in 2012?

I has a good talk with Marty Schmidt last week. The decisions made by some guiding companies are mind blowing..as is the selfishness that can exist in non-climbers (ie: people "buying" the summit rather than developing and respecting the mountains)..with so much ego and savings invested in their big day it causes a quantum values shift from traditional mountaineers.

the nepalese govt won't put any limit on how many people are allowed to climb everest, all money in the bank for them, they won't get involved in capping the limit even if it is a safety issue involving fatalities. fewer fatalities on the north ridge with few people climbing and the bottlenecks werent as severe.

Sounds like it's a bit out of control up there. Years ago the diving in the Red Sea was much the same - local startup operators with no clue, divers with no training being taken to 30 metres, dive boats that could barely float and had no life jackets, radio etc. Eventually the government stepped in and set standards for equipment, training, experience levels for the more difficult areas, and now things run a lot better.

Everest always continues to amaze me. What a sadly disgusting place.

Internationally renowned mountaineer Barry Blanchard thinks people should have at least 100 days climbing experience before tackling the highest mountain on earth.
