HI I'm new in this forum,
I currently study in Launceston and have done already a few day walks last year as well as a 2 day walk in the Walls this year. For the coming long weekend I'm looking for a three day hike in the northern region. As I have been to Cradle Mountain already a few times it wont be an option for me this time. Neither are the Walls a good option as I have been there a week ago. What other tracks could you suggest. I'm very flexible as long as I don't have to drive to far south. I'm looking for some kind of 3 day medium grade and remote area. easy walks are fine to.
thanks for your help,
Sam

Hi Sam,
Can i recommend a traverse of the Ben Lomond Plateau? Lake Youl has a beach(complete with sand dunes!) and the views from Stacks Bluff are truly fantastic. Its very remote and untracked for nearly all of it, you just have to be careful of whiteouts. Its only 45mins from Launceston and has some amazingly different areas in the one plateau. Rodway Valley is stunning!
Cheers,
Dave

That sounds quite good are there any actual tracks or I just find my own? Would the best access be via the ski village or are there any other options?

Does anyone else have any idea? Ben Lomond seems ok but I'd prefer if I could choose from a few options. Are there any longer tracks in the Western Tiers?

There is access from the ski village or from carr villa depending on where u want to go. there is one small tracked area near the ski village, other than that there is a cairned route once you reach the slopes of stacks bluff. You can also reach stacks and the southern end of the plateau from storys creek. There is a fair bit to explore on the plateau but it is fairly exposed.
Cheers

Just came back from a good 3 day walk.
Jackson Creek track to Myrtle then to Meston and onto Junction Lake for the first night. Then across to Cloisters then cross country up to Cathedral , some beautiful campsites just below the summit for the second night. Back down via Chalice Lake to Chapter Lake, then down the Moses Creek track.
We turned off the track at the Junction lake end of Cloister and went cross country, it is a bit of a bush bash up to the base of Convent Hill.

hi norts
I ended up walking par of your suggested route but as we started walking the second day from junction lake it was nearly lunch time so we skipped the way up to Mt. cathedral and camped at Grail Falls for the second night. Anyway I would be interested to go up to Mt Cathedral another time. I met another hiker on the way who tried to get up to Mt cathedral from grail falls but could not find any track. What is the easiest way to get up there?
Thanks Sam

Chapmans book describes it pretty well. You head up to the left side(as you are looking at it from the bottom) of Grail Falls. From the camping site head up stream towards Cloisters. You have to cross the creek( not the one that runs from Grail Falls) you cross it not far from the campsite. Once you cross the creek you go about 50 metres further left of the falls and follow the track up the side. Once you are on the track it is pretty easy to follow.
Once you leave Chalice lake and start heading up to Cathedral the cairns arent very easy to find (actually couldnt find any coming down last w/e).
