Southern Ranges

Fri 08 Feb, 2013 10:08 am

Walked into the Southern Ranges in clear weather this week.
A hard slog up to Moonlight ridge and then very pleasant walking accross the ridge to camp in the meadow at Reservoir Lake. Had a good look at the Hippo from Hill 3 en route.
Walked over to Pindars Peak and enjoyed the views of PB and the Sth Coast. Checked out by a wedgetail 3 times along the way, He must have been more curious than predatory!
I moved my tent to a lovely spot on the E side of the northenmost Pigsty Pond.
Climbed La Perouse in the morning via the stone arrow to arrive at the strange summit construction which reminded me of an alien artefact from the film 2001. Walked to the SE cliffs for amazing views of Swallows Nest Lakes and the Hippo. Returned to my tent for a long and leisurely lunch, inluding finishing up the Deb with melted cheese, packed up and walked to Hill 3 and walked out to the Hippo. It was extraordinarily hot and the rare shade spots under cliffs and the small pools were very welcome. Followed some cairns through scrub lines around the cliffs to the last slightly exposed scramble on huge jugs to the summit.
Another beautiful night's camping surrounded by cushion plant and King Billys and then walked out the next day.
Perhaps my last mountain camping trip this season, great finish.
