Hammock at Ben Lomond & Freycinet

Mon 18 Feb, 2013 9:42 am

I'm about to head down to Tassy for two weeks this coming weekend. Most of my time will be spent at Ben Lomond and Freycinet with maybe a couple of nights at Fortescue Bay at the end. Just wondered if anyone could advise whether there are suitable trees for hanging at Ben Lomond (we're hoping to stay in the climbers hut but if this isn't free or if I can't stand sleeping on a neo-air for a week I'd like the option to hang) and the Bluestone Bay camp ground at Freycinet? ta

It would be fair to say you've got no prospects for a hammock at Ben Lomond unless you BYO tree.

Milestone bay is more of a 4wders campsite, but it does have plenty trees! I camped there in winter and had the place to myself :-)

Even down off the plateau? I'm talking car camping.

Aahh, a bit different there then what is up on the plateau. There are spots adjacent to the Carr Villa car park area that would probably suit. I've never stuck my head into the campground near the entrance but mature trees cover that elevation so you'd probably find something down there.

We had a quick look at the campground on Sunday, pretty civilised. Flushing toilet and handbasin with a tap! There's a shelter with 2 picnic tables and a fireplace (currently out of use due to fire restrictions). There were plenty of large trees, probably not that close together but I reckon you'd find something.

The smaller trees around Carr Villa might be more suitable, although I don't think it's a designated camping area.
