Acropolis Camping

Thu 28 Feb, 2013 4:52 pm

Hi,

Just after some info in regard to camping near the Acropolis.

Can you camp at the base or is there camping opportunities on the plateau. Are you allowed?

Was going to camp at Lake Elysia but the ant stories have turned my wife off that......and me!!

Pine Valley Hut could be an option but crowds drive me nuts!!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks
Rick

I dont recall seeing any good camping spots on the ridge to the acropolis and I dont think climbing up the ridge from pine valley with all your gear is worth the additional solitude, it is one *&%$#! of a short climb. Particularly due to the fact there are quite a few good camping areas around pine valley but still away from the huts and crowds.

Quite right Frenchie, it wouldnt be worth carrying the pack up... BUT there is a nice place on the plateau to camp, it would be quite nice.

We would only be doing a one night stay so our packs will be very light!

Thanks for the replies gents!

I camped on the plateau many years ago. It was not far off the track soon after we finished the climb. I do remember it was very cold and wet but not much else.

Yeah I recall seeing at least one, or maybe two camping sites near the base of the Acropolis, so nearly at the end of the plateau. Obviously their main disadvantage is lack of water, and exposure to the wind, however having experienced Pine Valley mozzies that might not be such a bad thing this time of year.

Camped at Pine Valley Hut!

Even with a light pack I'm glad I didn't attempt to climb with it!!

Thanks all!

I had heard of the ants at Elysia, but they were not active in the wet when we camped there.
A beautiful campsite - only beaten by the grass area we camped on at the Ducane Range in clear skies.

I did encounter a whole swarm accidentally when I put my pack down near the drop off the Labyrinth towards Pine Valley.
If that is an example, I can understand the angst.

I did notice a lot of mossies on the Minotaur & at Elysia though.
