(WTB-TAS) Abels Volume 1 by Bill Wilkinson

Postby RosevB » Mon 26 Nov, 2012 4:17 pm

Hi everybody,

Just wondering if anyone has a copy of the first volume of The Abels by Bill Wilkinson, or knows where I could find one?

Alternatively if someone manages to find one I would be happy for them to buy it, and then for me to buy it from them!

Thanks so much.

There was one in the SH Bookshop at the top end of Charles St in Launceston the other week.

On this subject, while I have my own copy, I would happily redeem anyone if they found one in a bookshop and wanted to grab it for me, I am sure I could easily pass it on to a member of this forum. I doubt I would be stuck with them, they are like hens teeth.

Yes tasadam, that'll be the one.
A great little shop. He specializes in all things mountains, travel, and adventure. Guide books for anywhere and everywhere.
Worth checking out if in Melb.
The Abels vol I @ $80 I thought overpriced at the time. I bought my own copy second hand years ago when there were still a few
floating around. I carn't remember the last time I saw one at a second hand book shop, maybe 2 or more years ago? As you said,
"like hens teeth". The book itself is out of print, and as I heard from Bill, he has no plans to print more. So maybe $80 is fair price.
I wouldn't sell my own copy for $80. How about you?
The other day I found a little gem, a 1st edition(1979) copy of Siseman/Chapman's Cradle Mountain National Park.

You think $80?
I SMS'd him...
I said
Hello Andrew.
I understand you have a copy of The Abels Volume 1 by Bill Wilkinson. Can you let me know how much, including postage to Tasmania please?
Thank you and regards.

He said
Hello, I'm pretty certain I have a copy, but it may take me a little while to track it down. I'll get back to you on the weekend when I have it to hand. Cheers, Andy

I said
Thank you and regards,
Adam.

He said
Hi Adam, I have the book in hand - it's near fine, with a prev. Owners name. The last copy I sold was $200, lets say $175 inc postage if you can credit direct to my bank account. Let me know if that's agreeable. Cheers, Andy

Lucky I have one. Not paying that...

Wow, now I can understand how I sold my second copy for $40 so easily! :P You better be happy with it Tortoise!

Ridiculous prices, and really just shows that there is a great market for another printing run.

lol 200 $ for a "near fine" copy, this is just a scam. I'd think that a near mint copy would be around 70 $ TOPS.

You betcha i'm happy! :D :D Especially since i need both my arms and legs, so would have to go without on current PRICES.

I actually came on here to mention how much i appreciated being able to get one at a very good price from a nice forum member, and here you are! So thanks again - much appreciated indeed.

If we all keep an eye out for used copies, you never know how many might turn up at various 2nd hand book sales / markets etc. On the other hand, another print run sounds brilliant to me, but last time i contacted the author, it didn't sound financially viable. I wonder if there's a way of pre-ordering & paying by x number of people to make it viable...

I'm gobsmacked! I find it hard to believe. Thats not the price he told me. I think I'd remember a $200 book.
But he did say that he didn't have it at the time and that he would have to track it down or dig it up.
I think he must be confused. Maybe I'm confused.
tasadam you must have thought you were in the twilight zone.
I remember some hard cover books were printed. These are generally worth more than paper backs. But still.
Hey, for $200 I'd think about selling my own copy. Any takers?

This all makes me happy I picked up The Abels Vol I for sale at Arapiles Mountain Books(Melbourne) for $79.78 plus $11.00 postage. Sorry if I pipped anybody for the copy since I only found it once mentioned on this thread.

I seem to have ended up with a spare one of these, might do something creative in parting with it. An auction with proceeds to air rescue? :)

Sounds like a great idea, I would happily pre-order another copy, especially if it had updated road routes :p Anybody keen to raise this idea with Mr Wilkinson? (The extra print run, not the updated road info...)

Leave it with me.
I created www.theabels.dreamhosters.com and am aware of the interest in the book.
I will contact Bill again as we were having a chat about "something" quite a while back. Must revisit this...

If it's too expensive to reprint it, why not sell it online as an e-book ? It costs almost nothing to put in motion... Easy money for the author, and satisfied bushwalkers...

The danger is that somebody, seeing the demand, will simply scan it and put it online on p2p/filesharing websites. Having an old book completely out of print with ridiculously expensive second-hand copies is usually the type of things that "justifies" this whereas selling it as an e-book on the official website satisfies everybody.

Well, I need to replace the one I lost on Arthur. I'd prefer print but even a Kindle version would be better than nothing.

Wearing my Fullers Bookshop hat, just confirming you won't find new copies anywhere - it's very much out of print and I haven't been able to get any for over a year. I understand there are no plans to reprint at this stage - quite apart from the expense, I imagine there would be a fair bit of work revising track notes and maps.

But perhaps an ebook with disclaimers would be a happy middle ground.

^Yes, I imagine they would want to know, but I'm sure somebody will happily take it off your hands!

Slightly off topic, but would any of the Abel baggers out there be interested in an excel spreadsheet similar to the HWC Peakbaggers list that's around, in order to be abel (haha)to mark off one's progress? Haven't seen one around, though I am happy to stand corrected on that one.

Well, my excel skills are somewhat lacking, so it may not be quite so fancy as the peakbaggers bit, but I've tried to put it in the same file, just for ease of use. I should presume that as long as the original file worked on your Mac, this one ought not be any different. Let me know if you have any troubles (or spot any mistakes!), and I'll see what I can do.

So I've been trying to attach it here, but it doesn't seem to want to play along... Let me find somewhere else to host it.

So, try this one: http://www.sendspace.com/file/jj9kdr. If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll try something else.
