I didn't know there were that many huts in NZ... 300 is roughly the same number as France. Europe's got around 2000 in total. But 300 is the number of "guarded" huts, which by law means there is a winter section (whatever that is, but I'm guessing with a stove or something), a kitchen area (not necessarily with a cooking stove, but with a kitchen table and some seats) and of course a "guardian", taking care of it. From the various websites, regular huts with no regular care is about at least 3 times that number. How do NZ huts work ?

no there arent anywhere near 300 huts, DOC manages 950.....
a lot are the old basic forest service huts with galvanised iron sheeting stretched over a wood framework and not much else...
they were put in for deer cullers as well as trampers

I left NZ when I was 16. The one hut I have visited is Lakehead Hut and that was on a school trip :)

That said, I prefer not to use huts anyway so even when I'm over later this year I'll be looking to camp instead.

23. andrewbish - 10 :)

I got some advice from #2 glennj for my Feb trip to newzeld at the tramping.co.nz forum. Not unsurprisingly he had some great insights to share.

Not so sure about the guy at #18. ;)
