A well aged Suunto compass - RIP

My 20+ years Suunto compass can probably RIP now. The solution in the needle chamber has turned blue, bottom has turned opaque and a few flakes of something could be seen in sediment. Not exactly sure how it deteriorated but suspect it might have something to do with part of its life in my car and the heat it experienced. The needle still spins well and points north.

It is being retired. A new Suunto is in transit.

The newer ones look a bit ....made in elsewhere. But a recon. would be silly, I s'pose. Yea verily, old tools like the battered Trangia etc. do hold a lot of memories. Still looks quite serviceable in fact. (Tsk, tsk. The youth of today... :roll: )

Ha! I have that very compass!

All the numbers/letters have since peeled away and are floating around in mine.

Got a small Suunto (A10?) to replace it which has since developed a few bubbles.

Strider: Would love to oblige but my son has already claimed it for his Year 7 geography studies.

I guess I am curious, how did the liquid (?alcohol) turn blue? Guess I haven't abused the unit hard enough to peel off all the lettering.

I am hopeful. Nothing beats a compass and a map/atlas to accompany one's geography studies. Will need to introduce him to some orienteering skills in the holidays.
