I had read your post but I was still being serious about the stuff sack. A pillow cover and a stuff sack aren't quite the same thing, right? One has the ability to cinch closed tightly making it easier to keep the contents somewhat contained/compressed.
In any case (given how much time you've spent on the issue of pillows) you clearly didn't need any suggestion from me!

Your suggestion was good , that was my conclusion too,that the problem was not the stuff sack but the feel of one.
The one that Strider linked to :
would have been a very good alternative to the one I use.
It just happened that a mate had a spare liner so we had two "pillow cases" made from it.
Mind you, either way should be an easy DIY project for anyone with basic sawing skills (so not me...)
Come to think of it, that Thermarest stuff sack is about the size of my nightime stuff sack (thin silnylon).
In that I have two pairs of thin socks, merino top and bottom, spare wool hat, MP3 player,pack of cards.(spare undies if over 3 days)
But I like that it is bright red particularly when it rains or it's cold...

Mine's red too! It is a cheery color.
That Thermarest sack looks nice and fuzzy but a little too heavy for my tastes.
But then I can run a sewing machine, passably at least.
Another weight saving tip: After three days just turn the undies inside out.

Pillows..my bane. I can sleep fine without a mat but no pillow makes a sleepless night.
What would people recommend? I usually just bundle my spare clothes up but last weekend I found that just wasnt enough lift (only had a thin down jacket which gave no support).
Any recommendations? This is one peice of equipment im happy to spend a little on..especially with fathers day around the corner

I bought the Exped UL job previously linked in this thread.
It was pretty good, but I didn't like the surface (too plasticy) and the pillow moved about too much. So I made a light fleece (50-100wt) cover for it, taking care to make the opening slightly smaller than the inflated pillow. So, pillow doesn't move around in the cover, and the whole shebang doesn't move around much at all any more.
Pretty happy with that result, it's nice waking up in the morning and the pillow is still under your head

I use a roll top dry bag that I carry my food in, blow it up and it stays up all night.
I then just have a Thermarest down pillow which is soft and warm and noise free.
And then I just lay the down pillow on the dry bag, this gives me the right height for a great night sleep.
