Yeah, I was thinking of starting a poll - How addicted are you? And seeing how many photos people have got sorted and ready for when you're lucky enough with a guess (as I was earlier today with Legges Tor, having never been there).
I think maybe I should learn about Google Earth - Google maps in topo view is sort of ok, but it doesn't name enough peaks, and I'm not quite dedicated enough to the game to have all my maps beside me...
Though I did pull the Cradle map out the other day (for the PB photo  )

yeah google earth is good for local geography, confirming location, etc. but it doesnt show up distant peaks well, and plus it doesn't have names of peaks which is annoying. (although some have photos attached to them, which give it away) I'd love it if the 3d resolution was bumped up! I've been using another tassie map which shows all the peak names..

*edit*
ah yeah google earth does name the peaks, but just in a confusing out of place way :P
but doesn't tassie looks awesome when you exaggerate the terrain, more like NZ! ahh don't you wish we had at least one 4,000m mt sigh.. im thinking of the map editor on sim city - that was fun :D

I have not used google earth yet - although I have access to it and understand the 3-D views that Nick has been using.
Note that the 3-D view was not always available depending on where you are, although it may be more generally available now.
I find that the lack of topographics and names of features a bit of a limitation, so I use Google maps in satellite and topo mode for general lay of the land issues.
To refine the features I have been using the 25000 views in "The LIST"

Apart from that it is pouring over photos for clues.

Probably the other stat we should collect is where the photos have been. No doubt we will get overlap (eg Hesperus vs Moraine A), but there is a lot of the island not yet covered.

The mountains are labled (the well known ones at least) in Earth, just make sure you have "Places of Interest" ticked in the bottom left list. Even then they are a little out of place often (ie the sumit of Barn bluff is near the Waterfall Valley Hut, Crater Lake is on the Cradle Mountain summit - close in the scheme of things I guess!
Additionally you can easily overlay The List maps very easily for full topo coverage!
lso if you go to the settings and crank up the terrain quality all the way distant mountains will appear better. You can exaggerate the terrain to make them higher and steeper as well, which can be useful.
Just make sure you have an ISP who allows plenty of downloads. You can eat hundreds of megabytes in a pretty short time! :D

The guidelines say "If the winner does not post within 24hrs, the turn is forfeited and anyone can post and the first person to post is the new Photographer." Who would like this to be a shorter period, like 2 or 3 hrs to post before you forfeit? Changing the rules - takes me back to playing cricket in the backyard with my brothers. I the air between third slip and leg slip was automatically out if it was catchable height, except for a deliberate shot over the slips unless this went over the fence on the full which was six and out, but it wasn't out if the wicket-keeper try to catch it and dropped it.

2 or 3 hours is a bit long  short really, so because of the popularity of the game, how about 6 or 8? Or leave it at 24 as it is and us junkie diehards need to get a life?? :P

In some ways the thrill of this is in solving the puzzle, rather than posting it.
So in a sense we could be happy to have it free flowing by reducing the time.

Conversely, this game has the potential to produce burnout with people hanging out for the next fix or to beat the buzzer.
So perhaps having a longer wait every now and then may help keep it under control.
It is certainly a wonderful way to learn about walks in Tasmania.
It would be a shame for it to be short lived due to burn out.
I wonder if there is a way to alert people that there has been a new posting?

PS - has anyone PM'd kramster - he may not know it is his turn?

I PM'd him about half hour ago.
As for notification of posts, I have subscribed to the post (which I think happens automatically on posts you respond to), and by subscribing to a post you get an email for every post made.
And my email runs constantly, searching for new emails every minute.
Works for me!

Though on this topic I have been guilty of refreshing the page on the ODD occasion.

As for burnout, I have a cool idea for a post one day, a zoom of scenes from different angles, from the same location. And I could ad clues if it gets too hard.
Then there are lakes and coastal scenes.
But I do have a seriously sick number of photos...

thanks for the info about subscription, but this request is a little more subtle.
You see, we have almost filled a whole page discussing things without a single new photo being posted.
I guess its too hard to just notify when the photo goes up?

Sorry, not without one topic for photos and guesses only, and another for discussion.
I don't think that would work.

Nice little pause in the game to squeeze in a conversation.

As IT people we should know that the surest way to break something is to play with it! (referring to the rules not the game)

This would be great - but I don't think the forum software is that flexible.

You guys are hilarious!

Perhaps the break is good - don't you people have families/jobs/chores/books/tv anything to fill in 5 hrs!! :P

But yes 24hrs is toooooooo long - I can't last till then! After not having hardly a second to spare at work over the last two days and now there is no picture to guess when I'm actually home - it's terrible, it's killing me, argghhh

I don't think that would work.

Another thought on this would be for one topic for photos only, and another for discussion and guesses (and sporadic images of hourglasses and clocks and leaky pipes??)
That way you can monitor the topic of just photos.
But I can live with it the way it is. As walkinTas says, we don't want it broken.

Nice one tasadam

Posted 8:55, answered 8:55. (Correction to both - 8:25. Bit hard to read on this blackberry)
Good thing there is no money for doing this.

I remember this as the place where the bushes were moving.
On closer inspection they were simply covered in leeches!!

This will be a total guess I'm afraid:
standing somewhere on the Mary Creek Plain looking at or around Mount Mary?
Thought somewhere around this area or beyond the Irenabyss?

You could be onto something stubowling

There is an awfully big mountain/range buried in that cloud at the rear. Still thinking...
Note - my reference to leech bushes was re Lake Ayr - posts crossed over again
But if tasadam thought I was referring to his photo !!!! hmm Mary Creek Plains is even more infamous..

On the right track here...
Not "on the", but where in relation to? I'll have to check where that mountain is on my map to know whether to award this as close enough.

The hint is when you view this image large, check the distance between the bush I left in the pic in the foreground (left), and the "plain" below.

Try "Between X and Y"
Or to be more precise, between Xxxx Xxxxx Xxxxxx and ??

I can see why Nick S uses Google Earth
Amazing.
tasadam does appear to be looking over Mary Creek Plains - part way up the climb to Flat Bluff
PS - it does appear that Mt Mary will be off photo to the right.
This one is probably aimed straight at Frenchman's Cap [peers intently at cloud - nope, can't see it  ]

Half way up Flat Bluff was what I was looking for, coz there was no way I was stopping to take photos down there - see Leeches topic.
