A quick question for those who have been out to Mt Alexandra.....about how long did it take to get out to the summit from Moore's Bridge? Was it fairly open or scrubby? I see some small tarns on the map at Moore's Bridge. Would this make a good campsite?
Cheers.

I camped in 'the garden' at the tarns. Excellent spot v exposed though. Maybe 4hrs return from that first set of tarns, easy walking most of the way with a little bit of scrub just before the unremarkable summit.
That day I went from the camp to the summit of Alex then moved camp to Reservoir Lakes and went up LaPerouse in a comfortable day.

I camped on Moores Bridge - a bit more sheltered that the tarns in the gardens. Very open, think I walk 3-4 hours from Moores Bridge. There is a small band of scoparia just before the final push to the summit, but nothing that slows you down too much. Beautiful peak - Bisdee doesn't look any more inviting from this side either!

cheers guys,
the plan was to camp around here on the way out of a short foray into the Southern ranges......walk out to Alexandra on the final morning then out to Ida Bay....should be doable

There is a sheltered campsite for 1 tent cut into the scrub the far end of Moore's Bridge, in fine weather there is wonderful camping by the tarns

We camped closer to the Hills, but there are camping options everywhere really, if the wind isn't up.
Lovely area, off-track walking doesn't get much easier or more pleasant...

*crosses fingers for Chrissy weather*
To continue on the theme, anyone been out to Bisdee? Want to do it this time through the loop, but I'd like to have an idea of what to expect. It doesn't look all that bad from VC.

Ha Ha, good luck batman, looks can be VERY deceiving.
You might find the following old tramp article enlightening:
Another trip report by Bill Bewsher (of Bewsher Saddle fame) described the scrub along that ridge as "the thickest I have experienced in Tasmania" - an opinion I can only agree with whole heartedly.
Admittedly we were carrying full packs on our trip, but it took almost 10 hours of hell to cover the 1.5km from Victoria Cross to Bewsher Saddle. Without a pack, it would be a lot quicker, but I can still guarantee loads of fun and enjoyment. Getting off the back of VC is entertaining as it degrades to a rocky gendarmed ridge with a bit of scrabmling involved to get down to the scrub which is where the fun really starts. The only break from the scrub is a small clearing on Bewsher Saddle. From here it's still fairly scrubby to Bisdee, but no where near as bad as what you've just gone through. The best part is, then you have to do it all again to get back.

Love the sadistic tone to your post scrub master
So the advice would be to leave Wylly early, wear the scrub-armour and carry at least a couple of litres of water.......

Yes. I know of 4 people who have been here, 2 did it as a through trip with packrafts, the other 2 separate groups both said around 12 hrs return from a camp under VC. The scrub sounds awful.

I was thinking of camping in the saddle just below VC (or even near the summit if calm enough)(Yeah, right, like
that's going to happen

) and heading out very early to try to knock it off in a daytrip. But if it's going to be that bad . . .
Oh well, I can always turn back at half time if it's taking too long.
