Hello - long time lurker first time poster.
I'm taking my son on his first big overnight hike to Feathertop just after Christmas, and would prefer to do Diamantina Hut -> Feathertop -> Harrietville rather than an out and back from Diamantina Hut. The problem is we only have one car. My question is if we park at the bottom of the track in Harrietville, then walk to the main road, are we likely to able to hitch-hike up the mountain? I was planning to give it a go for an hour or so, and if no luck drive up and do the out and back. We're probably doing this Boxing day or the day after.

There is a bus that runs Bright-Harrietville-Mt Hotham-Omeo. Runs Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

I'd looked at the bus timetable, but it gets to Hotham from the Harrietville side about 2:30 pm, and I'd rather start a couple of hours earlier than that.

Are you planning on one nite or two?
I have never had any trouble getting up the mountain from Harrietville when hitching so making an early start on the road is an OK idea

Thanks Moondog55 - I'll give it a go. Just one night.

Yeah, I think if you waited at the General Store there on the left, you'd be able to get a lift ok with someone heading up.
Great walk btw, we did it the other way after doing the AAWT Walhalla to Diamantina, then as planned cutting out via Mt F and down.
We stayed at the cara park in a cabin by the creek, then headed out next day to retrieve food drum and other car, and home.

Ended up going on the 27th - waited about 15 mins and 20-25 cars before being picked up just over the bridge in front of the cafe.

Awesome, that worked out fine, 20 or so visitors passing by before a local came along hey ?

Yes - not too bad. But the person who gave us a lift was not a local, but someone heading from Bright to Jarvis Bay by the scenic route - over Hotham to Bairnnsdale and up the coast.
