the Alpine by public transport

Thu 19 Dec, 2013 2:50 pm

Hi!

Apologies if this is a double, I seem to have clicked the wrong button!

I'd like to explore the Alpine using public transport. There's got to be some buses, right?
Will be travelling from Melbourne - are weekend hikes feasible when using buses?

Have found the Bright-Omeo bus line already, so that's the Mt Hotham area potentially covered.
What about elsewhere - Bogong, Buffalo, Stirling/Buller and the area east of there and north of Licola?

Any tips will be appreciated :)

happy hiking!

You can get to Mt Bogong from Melbourne and return using V-Line, which has a service to Mount Beauty. I've done this, but it's certainly much longer than your weekend trip.

Send me a message if you want details, but prepare yourself a for a fair stretch of roadside walking to get there. The other locations you ask about will I think be even more difficult to access but I don't have any details on those.

Great to know!
Will message when planning to head to the area (been up Bogong just a couple of months ago). But I guess from Mt Beauty, there's the variety of fire trails that head up to Quartz Ridge, which may not be that interesting but it's another option apart from roadside walking.

I also remembered reading some trip notes about walking around the Jaithmathang/Pretty Valley/Fainters side and catching a bus out which was running to/from Falls Creek...

Very keen to hear about Buller/Stirling bus options... :)

Vline run a service from Mt Beauty back to bright, I think in conjunction with Mt Beauty Taxis. I have seen other forum members mention MBT may also do pickups from the road along the base of Mt Bogong.

Falls Creek Coaches run a charter service from Mt Beauty - you could contact them and see if there are any scheduled charters up to Falls you could tag along to. If you are flexible in timing, this can be a cheap way of doing things.

Neither of those run a scheduled service in summer, although adding on to an existing same charter may work for MMBL

Is that recent experience madmacca?
I haven't checked but with all the MTB activity up there in summer and the bus service up the mountain for them
I thought maybe there's other services too??????????????
