Walls through to OLT via Never Never, hitch a ride up the Lyell H'Way and walk to the Cap?

Striders suggestion is what I would think of.
Other options might be available as different ways to access the Overland Track, The Never Never is the most popular. Should be easy enough to get a lift from Lake St Claire to the start of the Frenchmans cap track. Then walk up and back and try and arrange transport out after that.
An unusual route but no reason why not.

Walls/Never Never/OLT/Byron gap to Rocky Hill via Goulds Sugarloaf/Pyramid Mountain exit to Lyell via Pigeon House Hill. Cpl hours road walk max to the FC track. That'll keep you busy
Disclaimer: This would be rather difficult

Quite easily done though. There is a route through here, even an old track at times.
