You are right. Sad to say that I've been on Horizontal Hill three times!

I've tried to look for my trickiest photo. It is also rather old, I should take better care of my slides. No "background information" as last time tasadam used it to solve the mystery (way back on page 1!!) :D

Looks a bit like the Western Arthurs but the foreground doesn't really fit so....

I'll say Mt Curly looking across the Spires.
I think I can see Cracroft hills and Frenchmans in the distance

Rather than being from Mt Curly - I think it is of Mt Curly taken from the Denison Range. The Spires are behind and Frenchmans is directly behind Mt Curly

I love these kind of photos
Gets the mind kicked into gear.
Very likely similar area to your first photo - as the rock and vegetation suits that area.

The basin in the foreground has 1 lake in it - but the depressions are consistent with 3 lakes.
Using The List to get up the 1:25,000 map, and starting from the North Star - you can see this basin, but the angle across the cliffs is wrong.

But there is an unnamed mountain south from the North Star across the Pokana River.
At its peak it shows at 1091m, but this photo is probably taken near a rock outcrop a bit down the side looking almost due west across the headwaters of the Pokana River.
The background is harder to read - particularly the pointy peak that is ghostlike a bit right of centre, that some are saying is Frenchman''s Cap
Following the direction in The List intersects with Princes Peak at 1028m - or possibly Mt Humbolt which is higher.
[Have now visited Dave Nobles Prince of Wales traverse photos and Mt Humbolt seems to be a possibility.
{I cannot see how you could get this view from the Denisons, though some of the peaks in the middle look like the Spires. But if they are, what happened to Conical Mountain?}

But for now - that is my suggestion - unnamed peak south of North Star looking across the headwaters of the Pokana River. Probably at a waterfall on the prominent cliff face across the valley.

A bit ironic but could the ghost like pyramid be Mt Gell.

I reckon Eggs is right or very close. The photo could be from the ridge running west of Pokana Peak which is at (WGS84 or GDA94 coordinates) 0433900E 5289425N and over 1100m high. I think this is about 1500m south west of the peak Eggs is referring to but it could be the same one. Go about 3.25 km west of Centre Star and about 1km north.

eggs was almost right, except the picture looks NW not W. MJD's description is right on. The foreground area does contain 3 lakes. You can see the southern part of the Spires (Southern Cone and White Pyramid) centre left, with Diamond Peak showing up further back right of White Pyramid. The main part of the Spires is hidden behind Conical Mountain, the big lumpy mass in the middle ground - as is Shining Mountain. And that is indeed the Frenchman's "ghost" on the horizon. The peak is unnamed, the top has a cement benchmark on it. The peak is a short and pleasant walk from Badger Flat.

OK, I have had a day off, & traffic on this topic seems to be slowing a little so I'll have a shot;
the photo is taken from Sphinx Bluff looking over to Denison Crag, Stacks Bluff etc.
I almost submitted the same photo a couple of days ago...

You sure do miss a lot when you leave this alone for a short while...
I know you're looking west from a Catrhedral - Rogoona kind of area... Need to go cross reference to pick the location exactly - unless some one beats me to it which is of course okay.

Yeah, a brief look at an online map and I'll say Rogoona, but have to cross-reference my photos now.
So I'll probably be back in a minute to say "forget that, no idea". :)

I know it's not Rogoona. I'm thinking Jerusalem. It looks like the southern end of Wailing Wall in the front, and Mt Moriah in the foreground.

I'm sticking with Jerusalem. I checked my photos and the view in that direction was all fogged in.
I can see it's not from Solomons Throne, but a little further south.
So if it's not Jerusalem it's gotta be close!

I recognise the little tarn in the foreground left of your image with the distinct shape... Small, near top left of this image.

I don't think the peaks quite line up right from the Temple. Certainly the right area though.
