Where to go?

Too hot in the mountains and sounds fine along the coast. But most coastal walks have to be booked before heading out. What a pain for a casual camper in Victoria these days!

I agree, maybe I'm getting old and fussy, but it seems that all the high country is either burning, ready to be burned, or recovering from being burn't.The beaches are good, but the window that you used to have to find drinking water seems to be getting shorter each year, and as you say, a lot of the coast is now on a permit, which is a pain in the bum if you want to wait for the right weather. I've started checking out the nearby states just to open up my options a bit, it gets a bit expensive though.

Its almost as if the climate is changing, oh hang on....

I sort of forget walking and pack my walking gear into a Kayak and go for a paddle. you can camp on some very nice sandy riverbanks out of sight of all and away from jet ski and motor boats as you only need a few inches of water under your "keel"
OK I do drive a fair way to get to them but for a weekend it is not so bad.

I'm not sure what you are looking for but for an easy coastal walk (6km each way) why not try the Fairhaven Campsite at French Island. There is a permanent (tanked) water supply there as I understand it and a toilet. Fully accessible by train and ferry as well.
