From Alpha Morraine looking at Davey Head

From Mt Hesperus?

Looks like it could be looking across James Kelley Basin (port Davey) according to theLIST, with that small conical hill behind it near the ocean.

EDIT: sthughes beat me to it by a matter of seconds (assuming we're right)

I reckon sthughes was hedging his bets with all those possibilities
Not really fair is it?

Now stubowling can decide whether that was the right spirit to put up suggestions? if he ever comes back.........
Note - the pano I put up from Hesperus on page 1 of this game is the same picture on its LHS
this is a section of another pano from the same spot
The walkers bottom left are on the track below the peak.

I think you're right, eggs... looks like its from a tad lower down from where you took your photo. So not the top of a mountain. Possibly on the track, as you said.

Hmm - I reckon this is from the top
its deceptive in the way he has cropped his photo to cut out some of the ridge above Fortuna and the shadows of late afternoon.
And his lighting defines Port Davey with more clarity.
Any lower down and the background would not line up with the same precision.
See the edited photo above - with a box to show stubowlings frame

Yes, it's from Hesperus late in the afternoon;

Well my understanding is that Alpha Lorraine is the track to Mt. Hesperus, If anyone can say with certainty it's from the very summit (a geographical point of infinitely small size) good on them, but personally I doubt it. He could be 10 paces either side or on the track down to Lake Fortuna so I figured it was better to say approximatley Mt Hesperus. Seems the spirit of the game has gone and if you are after a grid co-ordinate to say 6 decimal places then bugger it I'll leave that to people who have nothing better to do. I'm happy for Nic to have it and save any arguments! (if indeed it is Mt. Hesperus of course)

sorry sthughes

Having just been there last trip, the difference between the top of Alpha Moraine and the top of Hesperus is etched in my aching muscles.
On this stretch I had actually bent down to take a close up of a plant and cramped - only getting up again with great difficulty

Many have been equating the 2 places as the same area, so I was a bit too critical with my comment. I guess I was feeling sorry for the timing crossover with Son of a Beach

sthughes... you got it first, so go for it.

I don't think there's anything in the rules about multiple guesses, so it's all fair and square. :-) maybe such a rule would be worth considering, but for now, it ain't there.

Oh well, I would have got the Near Mt Emmett one straight off - that gravel is pretty unique.

Moraine A and Mt Hesperus are two quite different places - and have quite different views and aspects. Moraine A has no views south. The top of it does - but the moraine is the ridge leading up to the tops. Moraine B is the next moraine - and that does go up to Mt Hesperus.

Dave

PS - note that I think Alpha etc are quite silly names for these ridges (in this case)

OK, well back to a true panorama. I think the content of this one will be fairly easy for people who've been there, but how accurately can you guess where it was taken from?

NB: You'll need to click and view this one full size to see the detail of the blue bits.

Note that this is nearly 360 degrees of view, which can skew the perception a bit. Maybe 300 degrees, or something like that.

Looks to me like you're up on the Tiers somewhere, so I'll place my guess at "beside Panorama Hill".
Not that I've ever seen it, but looks plausible looking at the map.

I think Mt Ironstone was visible from there, but is just off both edges. Probably closer to the left edge than the right. Not sure what happened to the missing one or two frames, as it was supposed to be a 360 degree view. Two frames seem to have just vanished, and never made it to the panorama.

Yes, up on the plateau, but not Panorama Hill.

geoskid wrote:Are you at Ironstone hut?

Close. VERY close. But you can't see those blue bits from Ironstone Hut. I'm looking for a very precise location here.

Near enough. There's a low ridge between the hut and Lakes Chambers/Douglas/Johnny/etc. We decided to walk directly from the hut to these lakes so my walking partner could do some fishing there. We stopped at the top of the low ridge where this panorana was snapped. The hut is down behind (and somewhat beyond) the trees. The "hill" is Forty Lakes Peak, of course.

Your turn, geoskid!

Thanks SoaB. I have been following this game quietly since it began. I am impressed by peoples knowledge of places, I am learning heaps. Finally gave in and got the maps out on this one.
I'll pass on posting a pic - first one in with a pic can go next.

Top of Mt Geryon looking south. I think from the highest peak labeled 1507m ht on the 1:25,000 map.

Actually, no. Unless I managed to get over there without realising it which, given the topography, is highly unlikely.
