Watches - analogue, no fancy baro, temp stuff

Fri 11 Jul, 2014 8:50 pm

I know there are a few threads about watches and lots of good suggestions, but I've looked at hundreds of models and I can't seem to find what I have in mind. I guess what I have in mind just isn't technically viable or marketable.

  • Firstly, absolutely no Casio G-Shock … they're hideous and huge
  • I'd prefer a face diameter of around 35mm otherwise I find it sticks into the back of my hand when bent back; uncomfortable
  • No fancy stuff my Garmin GPS or Kestrel already does like altimeter, barometer, temperature
  • I'd really prefer analogue
  • Digital compass would be nice, preferably with analogue display … I've seen it on just one or two models
  • No chronograph dials — that stuff is just messy and visual noise
  • Comfortable band like canvas or leather — yes I know canvas doesn't last long, I'm ok with that
  • Shockproof would be nice but I look after my gear … though I left my last GPS on the roof of the car
  • Alarm would be nice if it's easier to set than the one on my GPS
  • Stopwatch and/or countdown timer would be nice, again if it's easier to set than the one on my GPS
  • Given those last requirements it'll likely be a analogue-digital hybrid
  • Rain/splashproof — I won't go diving with it

Here's my Pinterest of styles I like — strong military theme: http://www.pinterest.com/nathanaelcoyne/wrist-watch/

Cheers!

Whatever you end up with, consider putting it on a Zulu strap.

*EDIT*

I probably should have mentioned that they stink after a while, but you asked for comfortable. I've since upgraded to a Watchadoo bracelet.

A friend of mine had a single watch for all activities that should about fit your criteria (it even has a compass, if you want 35mm you'll likely need to look at women's sizes). I believe it's a Tissot T Touch Titanium.

They're beautiful well made watches but you'll be paying through the nose for it.

I wear this

Time, date, easy to read and you don't have to wind it. I've had mine over two years and it is still going on original battery.

Yeah I've been looking at women's watches too … although black or drab green doesn't seem to be in the palette. For some reason many women's watches especially Casio's are neon blue, pink, sunshine yellow etc :/

The TISSOT T-TOUCH collection looks magnificent … though I haven't gone looking at prices yet. Would be happy to pay around $300 for the right watch if it has what I'm looking for (and if it has barometer/altimeter that I can ignore then that's ok)

EDIT: Ha, $600 to $1,200 … yeah, nah.

Great watch. I've had my Eco Drive for 4 or 5 years I think. I can't remember when, its my only watch. Its plain stainless steel so its not very tac. When on AFX or something I used the elastic top section of an old army sock to cover the bling; just snip it off and you have a fat OD wristband.

oh, some trivia, i wear it on the right wrist to get weird looks.

I was given a watch for my birthday yesterday, just a basic (though very nice) analogue so if I get another watch specifically for outdoors/hiking then my requirements can be relaxed as I now have a perfectly nice watch for everyday wear.

Still not interested in a G-Shock though :)

Have you looked at Traser watches :?:

I have been very happy with mine. The NATO strap and illumination is great.
Might not meet your requirements though.

I'm tempted to go halves on the double option.

For the money it's hard to go past the Seiko SNK809 automatics.

Nice looking watch, love automatics. As I've always said every gentleman should have a nice automatic watch and a nice pocketknife ;)

Just ordered this one for US$85

Strong base watch for outdoors - has won some awards as well.

I also have a Casio Protech triple sensor for off track but this is all digital and large.

You got to be kidding me Strider great minds think alike!!

Been de shaving for about 18months now. Got an ATT Titan R1, and Simpson Chubby1,CHubby2 and Classic 1 and a bathroom cupboard full of soaps, creams and aftershaves. Absolutely love wet shaving, talk about turning a *&%$#! chore into fun fun fun ;)

Travis.

Ps, I dabbled in straights but I tend to take things too far and knew if I really got started with straights I'd be divorced as I'd need a separate room for all the strops and stones lol.

LOL Corvus! You poor thing. But seriously, what are they like? Worth the money or not? The photo looked decent but what's the real thing like?

Thu 04 Sep, 2014 8:33 pm

In three words NO !! Oh that is four  The paint!! on the body wore off on the one my son used after a couple of months.
Yes they are CHEAP and tell the time .
Anyone wanna buy a watch.

So why did you "collect" them? Couldn't control your watchphilia impulses? But seriously, I also saw quite a lot of painted models and that's just stupid. We all know those won't wear well even in the short term. But that model seemed to have an electroplated coating. I wonder...
