Tried to find a can without a ring pull in Australia lately? I needed one for a project recently and the only one that exists that I could find was tomato paste.

You can just remove the ring and open it like a normal can...

But I didn't want to open it. That was the point.

The ring pull cans have become ubiquitous in the US as well. It's nice since can openers seem very old fashioned (I wish the US wine industry would follow suit and phase out corks). But I found that the tops on ring pull cans are a lot weaker. On a multi-day wall climb in Yosemite it is common to take canned food (and eat it cold). On one trip all of my cans were pull top so I didn't even have to take a can opener. But in a haul bag the cans get stacked and pressed and a couple of these pull-top cans popped open on their own, making a big mess. I've never had a regular can open on its own. Ever.
I wonder, are there more common circumstances where this weakness is exposed?

Still handy to have a can opener. Ever pulled the ring pull and it just broke off and your food is stuck inside the little tin. Oh noooo. Disaster. Lol

Always take along a large brick just in case there are no flat rocks around

No need to carry any tools. Just give the can a karate chop!
