OK, large clue in the distance, location suitably obscure.

I thought that too at first, but the photo looks like a reasonably wide angled shot, so the King Wills seemed to be a bit too far to the east.

Perhaps from Mt. Ronald Cross with a ridge of the Loddon Range in the near distance.

Are you well up along the ridge between Pigeon House Hill and Rocky Hill?

I think tasman will be right.

Curious that Ronald Cross shows in the list as the most northern peak of the Loddon Range, but just west of the peak is a side ridge that rises to 900m - which is probably the near ridge in the photo.
I have heard of people walking along the King William range, but the Loddon Range south of Ronald Cross seems to have a spectacular ridgeline.
Has anyone been along them?

The two hills on the edge of the mist under Frenchman's cap have the right shape to be Mt Mullen and Junction Peak. That would mean he's on the track that is shown on GE as crossing the plateau between Arrowsmith and the Beehive.

Edit Nah! I agree with Ronald Cross, it is the only way to get Jukes in the right spot.

Ah ha! Correct quadrant of the state but not Bathurst from New Harbour. You have certainly picked up a clue on the similar geology to the New Harbour Range.

Well I am sticking with my New Harbour guess as to where you are, and as I cannot think of any other names in the area for now and I have to go to work I will say looking over Red Point Hills to the Ironbounds.

Actually, looking at that photo again, that could be a pretty good guess - the mountain in the distance is considerably higher than where you are so it must be the Ironbounds (if you are indeed on New Harbour Range).

But, looking at Dombrovskis's photo, you must have used a fair bit of zoom.

No zoom, most likely 35mm end of my 35-85 zoom lens on my Konica T4 SLR. Another clue then, date was January 2003 and the distant range was not so distant but obscured by smoke haze, and the temperature about 35 degrees! The direction of view is similar as your guess of New Harbour to Bathurst Ranges ie looking East.

So Bathurst Range looking at Ironbounds? All cloud and rain when I was there.
That's my last guess before I am forced to get the map out...
Maybe later.

I am trying to give a further clue without giving it away - the photo was taken at a route junction that Chapman shows in a map in his SW Tasmania guidebook :) I am not on a named point or peak, but a range name is what I am looking for, and naming a well marked feature within 2 kms gets a bonus point!

Anyone want more clues?
(Edit) The highest point on the range in the distance is Mt. XXXXXXXXX and is in the XXXXXXXXX Range.

Ok - big clues are a track junction in the SW book south & west from Rugby.

The only elevated track junction I know of is the junction of the track over South West Cape Range and the old track to Mt Melaleuca.
And looking East gives you Mt Melaleuca (a bit south of east) and Mt Rallinga to the North East.
Melaleuca looks the better fit - but still not convincing??

But I will go with Melaleuca for now. - ie Mt Melaleuca in the Melaleuca Range.
Edit - and a well named feature within 2 kms would be Window Pane Bay

CORRECT eggs on all points plus bonus point :!: I was starting to think you had all given up, but good to keep it moving. This photo was taken on a nine day circuit of the South West going anti-clockwise from Melaleuca. Our day from Window Pane bay to the saddle below Mt Karamu was in the most unlikely SW Tassie conditions I would ever imagine. There were fires in victoria and a very strong northerly blowing across the central highlands, and we cooked in 35 degree temperatures! Water was scarce on the range with only one soak and a small tadpole infested tarn for the day. The smoke haze blotted out any long distance views for several days.

The game has quietened down - and tends to go in spurts.
I would love to do the South West circuit - although I was thinking of back tracking via Window Pane Bay and heading out over Mt Melaleuca - looks quite interesting.

Anyway - someone like to tell me where I was:
[Yes - its a zoom - but from a reasonably popular place]
