Snake ID anyone?

Postby cajun » Mon 06 Oct, 2014 4:41 pm

Hi all,

My darling wife and I did a walk this afternoon around the local firetrails and came across this beautiful creature. We are in southern Sydney.

Apologies for the poor quality, it was taken with my phone, and at my wife's behest - at a distance

Any ideas?

Looks a bit like a common tree snake (Dendrelaphis punctulatus).

Thanks Whitefang,

I had just finished searching and came to the same conclusion. It was so still, and only moved it's head a cm as I approached.

Beautiful colours.

Came across one of these years ago on a fire trail in Kentlyn (east of Campbelltown). It reared it's head and body up, the sun caught the underside of its body and it shimmered in the sun light. Wonderful experience.

Definitely a Green (or Common) Tree Snake.
They can rear and sometimes even appear to strike like a dangerous snake but are non - venomous and definitely not bitey.
Lovely animals. Also very common along the Severn River in Sundown NP. Saw about 6 in 2 km last time I was there.
