Wicked shot icefest. This is great

I was hoping to see it from about 20,000' on descent into Melbourne.
Unfortunately flight was very early (which never happens into Melbourne) so I missed it completely. Once on the ground, the low level cloud covered the entire sky.

Nice one icefest, very nice, no luck here at the foot of the Dandenongs, about 7/8 cloud cover over us.

Stupid clouds.

It was a gorgeous night in Middleton, Tasmania. I wandered down the beach, very calm and still. At the point of full eclipse there was a faint aurora to the south, shimmering soft pinks and the Milky Way was bright overhead. Crazy beautiful.
No time to process pics, perhaps in a day or 3.

So am I! But I'll add my poor attempt. Just for contrast purposes.

Missed out on the blood moon, but caught the eclipse....clouded over at the last moment.

So do I. 70mm just isn't enough.

Stand on a chair.

Tried that. Then I climbed onto the roof.

No luck in Ballarat last night. Caught sight of the shadow partially over the moon early on from out a window at work but when I got a chance to have my break the cloud was too thick to even work out where the moon was in the sky.

Working with a gorillapod and 300mm lens, it was still not stable enough or enough light on the moon to get a crisp focus.
But this is my best shot:

That's incredible eggs. Did you find that manual focus enabled a clearer image?

Some shots taken between gaps in the clouds

That's what RX100 Mk3 has... Yes, really need that 300+mm reach, preferably into the 400-500mm range. However, there are still other compositions one can do with a shorter tele or even wide angle.

I'd say that's a pretty clean shot. Last night none of my shots were sharp despite manual focus, tripod and timer release. I suspect it was because of a very thin layer of cloud even though there were small breaks from the main cloud cover. Going to try again with the same settings and setup tonight with what'll be open sky. I just want to confirm it's not a hardware issue.

I tried a bit of manual adjustment - but with the image so dark, you really couldn't tell with the naked eye.
Certainly the auto focus reckoned it had lock and I think the best one was an auto shot.
Looking at pteropus sequence its pretty clear that with good light it was very crisp, but with the tremendously reduced light level it becomes much fuzzier.
At exposures of a few seconds - it could even be the movement of the moon itself coming into play.

Another moon photo

Horsecat, clean your lens!

Nice shot with a touch of artistic flair!
