Re: GAME: Where Am I? Part 2

Stunning photo

No idea

Reminds me of some parts around Cradle Mountain - only flatter.
Probably Walls of Jerusalem or on the Central Plateau

I'll have a stab at Solomens Jewels as it seems the obvious choice.

Looks like the top of Ephraims Gate, in the Walls of Jerusalem. But then there's not enough distinctive landmarks to really distinguish it from any other Pencil Pine and Tarn areas in Tasmania.

I am acting as scavengers proxy and all I can hint at is that its in the Cradle area near a "peak"

Right geology, wrong park.

Bugger, went into Slaughterhouse Bay in a storm on a crayfishing boat, no wonder it looked different :D
I'm out, I guess you are further north

Hint - I'm in one national park, and you can see another in the distance, but neither one of them is Freycinet.

Are you on Maria Island.....I think it's called Haunted Bay looking past Barren Head? (towards Tasman National park)

Re: GAME: Where Am I? Part 2

Tue 11 Aug, 2009 4:35 pm

You got it Phil :!: Haunted Bay, towards the bottom of South Maria Is. It's a stunning place to walk, boat or mountain bike to. The same granite as Freycinet - in fact a belt of Devonian granite runs all the way from Victoria (incl. Wilsons Prom) through the Bass Strait islands, and down Tassie's east coast as far as the Tasman. Makes a change from all that dolerite

Take it away Phil,

cheers

I'll go with this one - looking for the name of the mountain that we are ascending. I am off-line now but have requested corvus to act as my proxy. Otherwise, if you're pretty confident that you've got it right.......feel free to keep the game moving :D

Well just before I go off-line, I'll guess Stack's Bluff, with the main ascent to the top right (off screen)

Oh I do remember that horrendous scree but as I am acting as a proxy again I must stay silent but for those who have done it an easy answer.

Would that be the scree you cross on the track to Quamby Bluff?

Yes you have it (awful scree if you miss the proper track)

From memory the track crosses at a fairly narrow part of the scree . So Corvus, does this mean I have to go strolling in September? :D (last PM)

For this one, name the lookout (where I'm standing) and for a bonus point the feature in the foreground.

Looks like the Mt Claude lookout to me, from the road. Looking west. Where you park before crossing the road to head east up the road to the towers on the way to Mt Claude proper.
Don't know the name of the feature, so if I'm right, no bonus point for me.

Well done walkinTas (and thanks to corvus for helping me out whilst I was off-line :) ).

We actually ascended via that scree in the photo; needless to say that my old man (who has some knee problems in the past) was quite unhappy by the time we got to the top of it

It's a great walk though (Quamby Bluff) and has some fantastic views......and is only 45 minutes down the road so makes for a great day trip :D

I take it "Eucalyptus Tree" isn't the foreground feature you are after...

Very good Kramster - that's what I was thinking too.
I have a great shot of conglomerate rock covered in gorgeous lichen and some small plants at this spot as well.

However, the ridge off Mt Claude that runs off in the foreground has no name in "The LIST" - but probably has been named.
Round Mountain is off photo to the left - and across the Forth River valley is Bell Mount - which is where a former competition entry was from - but that may be too far to be considered foreground.
