There is a track in the middle of a logged coupe, go left at 55 G 596,687 5,421,296, go in a bit and then walk east to 55 G 597677 5420215. The pools are about 200 metres from ironbark falls on the other creek. Tracks up there are a bit rough. About 12 km from St Helens.

I'm flying to Launceston on Monday for 3 weeks in Tas, staying at St Helens for a few days initially. In the NE we specifically want to have look around the Blue Tier, maybe a few waterfalls and Bay of Fires. I may take a look at this too but need to be careful about where I can take a rental 4WD (unnamed forestry tracks are out). What are the access roads like into here? (I assume that your comments about rough applies to the foot track?)

This area used to be pristine, well after the tin miners left nothing much happened for 50 years, but now are trail bikes are about most weekends. The track I refer to is Transit trk off Trafalgar as shown on scavnager's reference to google maps. No worries, johnw, all named. The road track is rough but solid, in other words I take a 2wd in there, slowly, used to be able to get back into Loila Tier but a bit washed out now.

The walk in from the north east is unmarked, open peppermeint country, easy going apart from a few wet gullies. Some inconsiderates have cut a track in from the southern side of the pools on Nevada ck, why do people have to drive everywhere? The pools are little tarnished treasures because of the rubbish that comes.

Still pretty though. Crystal clear water over four drops. There are a few other waterfalls on Constable creek, more tea tree stained though, that are unmarked up there.

Hi,
You asked about Betts falls. The falls, according to local knowledge, are on Betts Creek and on private property at Sisters Creek. I have tried to contact the owner but he is away at the moment. I had thought of including the falls on my list of falls for tourists to visit, but if access is denied, I won't bother. Visited Detention Falls yesterday and they were magnificent. Did you know that there are about 40 falls between Reece Dam and the sea, on the Pieman River? Granite Falls are on the maps but be blowed if I can find them. Been to Upper Scamander a couple of times and walked up and down the creek. Found Granite Knob and some interesting geological formations in the creekbed where the granite has melted some mudstone, but no falls, unless a small rapid counts. has anybody seen them? jh

thanks westinlet, i took a tourist from thailand to the detention falls in the middle of last year and the viewing platform was closed off with warning signs saying that it was unsafe. Is it open to the public now ? 40 falls hey, wow thats quite an amount isnt it i assume the majority of them are unnamed. I did notice on one of my scale maps named (SOPHIA) about 80 falls that were marked on the map, so im thinking this list that has been created with about 230 falls on them could swell to double that in the future Good luck to the poor bloke who has to update it..

Detention falls viewing platform has been renewed. Couldn't see the track to the base, maybe overgrown. Bit wet and slippery at the moment.

Im not sure if its the track your talking about but back from the viewing platform a few hundred metres there is a track that drops away down the hill. Looks quite dangerous though and its quite a nice drop to the bottom.

I think I know the track you're talking about - it goes down to the Detention River. A bit rough but plenty of trees to hold onto so you don't fall. When you get down there you can bush bush along the river to the bottom of the falls (though a little leechy).

The track to Detention falls actually used to go to the top, it's only in the last few years that the new track and viewing platform have been there. My ex-boyfriend is a local around there and showed me the start of the track to the top, it's when you first walk into the bush and goes off to the left, hard to explain when you're not there lol! Apparently he took his dog along that track one day and his dog slipped at the top of the falls and fell - awful!

Frentree Falls and Leda falls are great near St Helens. Leda best in summer when you can wade up the Constable Creek. My other favourite relative unkown down that way is Harridge falls.

I visited Detention Falls in Nov 09. The platform is still blocked off, though it's easy enough to get down underneath it onto the rock. Yes, not to far in where the track does a right-hand bend, off to the left you can still make out the old track to follow to the top of the falls.

I've been to Split Rock Falls a couple of times, but I've never heard of Cleft Rock Falls. Split Rock Falls is a lovely spot in a really interesting area. It can be done as part of a loop past Meander Falls.

I recently learned that the official name for these falls is Cleft Rock Falls (not Split Rock Falls). This was gazetted 4/11/1987 and has since been reconfirmed.
