South West Cape circuit - water supply and quality

Postby Team-Dodgey » Fri 16 Jan, 2015 10:07 am

We're doing the full SW Cape circuit in late February. Having done it many years ago, I recall that water was not a problem. Is that still the case? Do all the regular campsites at the beaches have a reliable water supply from the creeks? Also, I assume the quality is OK? Or should we take a UV Steri-pen?

Hi Team dodgy,
I did the full SW Cape circuit in Feb last year with a commercial company. We had no probs with water or the quality. We just filled up from the campsite in the morning for the day walk. We took some extra on the section from Wilsons Bight to Window Pane bay because it is a long hard day.
Hope you have fun and don't get as many leeches as I did

We have done this wander twice, once each direction. Overall water was no problem and we did not feel the need to treat any of it. We typically only carried a litre with us each day and topped up on the way.

The only area to take care and carry more water if it is warm or hot is the traverse section of the South West Cape Range. The Northern tarn mentioned by Chapman is essentially non existent any more, so do not rely on it. Also the area is subject to much damage and erosion which I feel is due to camping. There is a tarn I would rely on at the very Southern end, but please do not camp here to protect the delicate environment.
