also the age of the design fits, they havent put louvres on hut windows for decades. i"m struggling to recall what the hut looked like but the general design is along the lines of Abel tasman huts at one stage, the coastal ones have been upgraded since, so look different.

Wayno correct on both counts. Taken October 4th last year in a freak snow storm my cousin and I got caught in.

Started out on the coastal track in sunny conditions and finished the inland track in snow. We had just arrived at awapoto hut before it started to snow and made our way from awapoto to castle rock hut in the snow the next day.

The trees around it got devastated in the Easter storm of 2014 and also 2011 I think. One tree went through the long drop. I have more photos of it but will post in another thread.

I know this. This is that really well known track to the northeast of Auckland.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

Well according to NZ Topo - it could be Omanawanui Track in the Waitakerie Ranges west from Auckland.

ah someone who knows how to use a map with skill.... smack on, its Part of the Hillary Trail which was the track name i was hinting at but technically you are right, the Hillary trail just took pre existing tracks and put the label trail on top of it...

We loved the short time we were out at Piha. It looks like a great range to explore.
I did need the picture of the beach to get it though.

Lets shift back to Africa again - not looking for an exact answer here.

He He - yes it was a large target.
This was from Iten - a small town perched on the western edge of the great Rift Valley in Kenya.
It is a place where the dramatic scale of things is emphasised.
This little town is used by athletes for training at altitude. The rim here is above 2300m high. The adjacent valley floor is under 1100m.

Yes, Howden. I just thought of it as I was having dinner. Must have been thinking of my Kiwi nephew who is a Hansen.

Yeah the beavers have certainly left their mark. Apparently the Argentinians introduced them to Tierra Del Fuego in the 40s to hunt for their pelts and they have since spread into Chile and Ilsa Navarino.
Still it is a great place to walk.
As for the pic - wild guess - Mt Bromo
