Fagus Watch 2015

Wed 08 Apr, 2015 3:14 pm

Hi All,

Just got back from Mt Field, and it looks like the fagus turning is happening a bit earlier than last year. I didn't make it up to the Tarn Shelf, but certainly the shrubs around Lake Fenton are well on their way, which I seem to recall that around this time last year they were only just starting to show hints of yellow.

Anyway, time for us Fagus Followers to dust off the boots and start planning trips. My guess is the show will be over by early May :)

Was up at the Tarn Shelf on Good Friday and the Fagus up there is certainly turning. Starting to look good and given a couple of weeks will be even better

Was up at lake Skinner on the weekend and was surprised to see some up there. Looked stunning.

The little fagus I've got in my backyard has already started to turn and it's in a warmer location than the wild fagus

I had a trip out along the Tarn Shelf on Tuesday and was surprised how much it had turned.

Just had a report that the fagus at Cradle is now well advanced. So where are all the photos?

Hounslow Heath yesterday had the full range from green leaves to bare branches.
Light not adequate for distant views but still a delightful fagus walk.

Ahhh, good to see you're back. And how did you like the Bert Newton Nichols Memorial Palatial Monstrosity?

LOL It is certainly a monstrosity, so much wasted space! I dont do huts, or people too well for that matter so I just sat out on my platform and watched the clouds roll by on my own

hey DanShell,

You got some great shots, such a diversity in the scenes. Fagus3 and Fagus5 would be my favourites. I would be very interested to know your reflections on the clothing and equipment you carried- if you were to do it all again tomorrow, what would you take that you didn't take this time- or what would you leave behind..?
Cheers

Hi everyone,

we are kind of ring-ins to this fagus watch thread but have been down in Tasmania now for 8 weeks doing a number of walks and touring around. Our last big walk was to Pine Valley, The Labyrinth and The Acropolis on the 8-13th April this year. The fagus was looking fantastic and the view from atop The Acropolis was one of those moments I want burned into my memory for all eternity. So beautiful. Here's a picture from the Acropolis. The western side of the mountain was also carpeted in orange/brown fagus and in the Labyrinth there was fagus turning everywhere. Really wonderful to have caught it while on our visit here.

Did the Dove Lake circuit walk today, clear sky, light (cold) wind, and some fagus showing around Marions lookout and further south, also some below Cradle but not very vibrant yet.

Did Hanson and Twisted Lakes yesterday, about all over bar the shouting.
Small patches but the bulk of the trees have already lost their leaves.

Nice pics all round. Davo is right - nine parts over. It's probably come early enough to foul some peoples travel plans this year. Just to say that there's always some sheltered spots. Eg west walls of Crater l, for the next few days at least. A pack raft would hep there. ; ) there are others around roadway aspect if cradle eg..

The Fagus on Tarn Shelf was looking very bedraggled today (22 Apr). It was better at Lake Fenton along first km of the Lake Wesbter track on 21 April. So try there if you must go up to check, since you can walk to it easily. If that is no good then don't expect Tarn Shelf to be better.

Still a bit around on the Cathedral Plateau, this taken from the creek above Grail Falls.

Had a chat with Chris Bell, who was up there getting some shots, who said there was plenty of the stuff at Frenchmans which had hardly started to turn when he was there 10 days ago (or something along those lines). Somewhere for the latecomers to get their fill?

And another of the same creek for good measure.

Just spent 20th-23rd around Mt Murchison and Mt Tyndall. Plenty of nice pockets of fagus on Mt Murchison but very little left on Mt Tyndall around the lakes. Only have an iPhone photo from Murchison to contribute at this stage.

Some beautiful photos on here though from others. Inspiring stuff.

Not fagus as in Nothofagus gunnii, but rather N.antarctica from S.Chile. Deciduating in New Norfolk. Like ours, a response to its polar origins.
