Yes, it's Tenerife. Can you identify the crater-topped mountain, or the mountain from whose flanks the photo was taken?

You are probably on/near Pico de Teide.

Yes, I took the photo while I was on the side of Teide, at an altitude of 3500 metres...

Well done, Icefest.

Teide is the highest mountain in Spain at 3700 metres. Yes, the Canary Islands are part of Spain (according to the Spanish government anyway), even though they are off the coast of Africa. The crater in the photo is the second-highest mountain in Spain, Pico Viejo. Its last proper eruption was just over 100 years ago, through a vent on the side which is not visible in this photo. You can climb Teide from sea level to 3700 metres in one push. It took me 14 hrs 20 mins, although the fit youngsters do it in under half that time. The ascent is almost all walkable with just one piece of easy scrambling.

Tenerife is a fabulous destination for walking, although I prefer the lower parts where going off-track is not prohibited. I don't know any other destination where there is such variety in a small space. From coast to rural villages to forests to volcanoes within a few kilometres. Lots of infrastructure to explore (old tunnels, channels half-way up cliffs, etc) too, plus lava caves and lots of great abseiling and canyoning. Everything is readily accessible through a comprehensive and inexpensive bus network. Great weather, no malaria, no harmful animals, good swimming, great food, cheap coffee and beer. The only downside is that there is not a lot of potential for overnight walks, as most places are within range of a day walk.

Could be, she was captive in a namesake. Although I don't think her hair would be long enough for this one :).

That's it weetbix. On Tower Creek, a tributary of the Yellowstone River. And near the Lamar Valley, a great wildlife hotspot. Over to you.

Weetbix is out of range for the next few days, so anyone is free to go next to keep the game moving.

Too easy,.... That is the Gallipoli Peninsula, or looking out onto Kabatepe and onto Suvla Bay to be more specific.

Certainly is Oyster - to Gaba Tepe from Lone Pine, and Suvla bay from Chunuk Bair. It just seemed appropriate :-)

I hope I was right about Kelimutu

Quite befitting. I was quite sure of the vantage points but thought I best play it safe.

Now for a variation of a theme. Its worth double bragging rights if anyone can name the valley or nearby town.

it might be worth telling us the country/area.
It sort of looks like it could be in/near Pakistan?

Yes, I was thinking I might have to to that.
It's the Chora Valley in Afghanistan.
Pakistan is pretty close, so over to you Eggs.

I wasn't expecting that.
But Afghanistan may have been quite hard.
So back to NZ then

Re: Game: Where-is-it? (international)

Yes - this is from the pass looking down to Doubtful Sound. The streak of water on the far LHS slope is sometimes listed as the highest waterfall in NZ. More of a cascade, it comes off Lake Browne at 828m above sea level.

OK then... still in NZ (don't have too many international trip photos - need to plan more trips!)
