Emergency teams are searching into the night for a 76-year-old man who went missing while hiking at Wilpena Pound in South Australia's Flinders Ranges.

The man was last seen about 1:15pm near the Wangara Lookout.

Officers from the Special Tasks and Rescue (STAR) group have gone to the area to coordinate the search, and the police helicopter will scan the ground from above.

Volunteers from local emergency service units are also assisting, but police have not released any further details.

Weather bureau senior forecaster Mark Anolak said conditions should stay fine through the night, and will get cold early tomorrow morning.

"No rain forecast for that area, in fact not even a cloud in the sky to be honest," he said.

"We have clear skies over the area which will result in coolish temperatures overnight, light winds, and I imagine temperatures will get down to around six or seven degrees by about sunrise tomorrow."

Sheesh! If you want cold then this guy chose the right spot. My wine glass was frozen onto the roof of the car there!

As night fell, a police helicopter used heat-sensing and night vision equipment to help the searchers on the ground.
The man was found and picked up by the helicopter crew about 1:30am.

He might have just been settling down for the night and dem SuperRangers buzz in and interrupt a nice fire!
