Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 3:22 pm

Yes - I have a lovely photo from about that spot with the same grove of trees in it & the pole marking the track - it was a nice day in autumn though. No snow, but the fagus was glorious.
However, that wrecks what I was going to use next.

Oh well - here is one of 2 the kids again from long ago - not a long walk, but it started in good snow.
What delightful place for kids are we at?

Looks like Lost World on Mt Wellington eggs;
a great little climbing crag also.
I have also done an underground linkup along nearly the whole area (ie. under the boulders / in caves), very fun!

stu - I was wondering when you would have another crack - thats 26 correct answers now. (By my counting)

My apologies!

Looks to me that you and the kids are at Lost World on Mt Wellington. If I'm right, it could of been one of these chasms pictured I gave myself the willies jumping over a couple of months back.

A very easy one here to keep things moving along hopefully...

I think you are En-route to Frenchmans Cap... just past Baron Pass/Nichols Needle and on the way to the very neat and aptly named Artichoke Valley.

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 3:50 pm

Spot on, just past Barron Pass looking south-west to lakes Gertrude, Magdalen & Millicent,
with, I think, the peak in the far distance being Mt McCall?
I hope to visit all of these lakes one day, beautiful country out that way.
Over to you...

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Not sure if it is Mt McCall or not... I think the nearer one is Clymenstra? (or however you spell it)

Anyway, on on on...

Yep, part of Clytemnestra on the right but the pyramidal peak in the far middle distance is what I thought may be Mt McCall - eggs?
I'll resist this one even tho I have been where you are..

I reckon the top of fossil cliffs at Maria Island looking towards Bishop and Clerk (actually more like Mt Maria)

Whoops - I have broken the rules....its not in Tasmania..

Anyone want to have a stab? - it is in Australia though.

No. Put a tas one up :P

Hehehe

Nice rock though!! not to mention that cairn/logbook

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 4:20 pm

Um ahh.... outside tassie now are we... wait till walkintas gets word of this! :o
I'd guess somewhere along the Macdonnell ranges in NT by the looks of things... How about Mt Sondor?

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 4:40 pm

gee - that was well done kramster
There is a picture of that cairn and range behind on the Larapinta trail website - under the tab "Larapinta 223 (end to end)"
And yes - it is called "highest point and end of the trail: Mt Sonder"

as for the other questions - it is a bit far fetched to call it the Clytemnestra - although it is the ridge that continues on from it.
But I suspect your Mt McCall is actually one of the Cracroft Hills - [edit though Mt Propsting/McCall is edging in to the right of the peaky one]
try this link for a photo from this competition: http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=2307&p=21042&hilit=propsting#p20956

Well done - back to you kramster. Its the southern "summit" on Mt Sonder. The summit in the distance is actually higher but apparently few folk go to the "real summit".

Gosh, that was a bit of a random guess actually.
I don't have the brain-space to choose another picture (and I have had a fair go today), so anyone feel free to post the next picture :)

Pretty obscure I know but all the others i''ve put up have been easypeesy

No-one having a stab? Might be one the PeakBaggers know...... Quite a remote but well known peak

Stu Should know one of the mountains in the foreground....

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 8:00 pm

Lets assume the most distant peak looming out of the haze is Mt Rugby...

Oh no! Can't turn my back on you guys for a minute. Is that a photo from the largest island in the Tasmanian archipelago.

Actually, walkers are not supposed to go to the true summit of Rwetyepme. It's a special male initiation site for the Aranda people.
Unfortunately I only found that out after I'd been up there. But if I ever needed a reason apart from pure fear not to go back (not that I do), that's good enough. But never again. The knife-edge traverse is a killer - not so much the rock scramble as the wind. I crawled back and was still picking spinifex out of my knees two weeks later . . .

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 9:43 pm

Thanks for the confirmation - it really is buried in haze - so bit of a lucky guess.

However, it doesn't mean I know where you are.
Just compared the last shot towards Rugby in the competition - which was from Stuarts Saddle - doesn't line up.
And my shots from Sirius seem to imply its not off the Western Arthurs.

So all that's left is Mt Bobs??

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 9:48 pm

Noooo not bobs :) was taken right on dusk sorry for the haze..... the picture is called the mighty southwest... taken from a remote but iconic mountain

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 10:02 pm

Rugby might be a bit to the right of where your looking from....

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 10:13 pm

Hmm.. Precipitous Bluff gets the view to Rugby past the northside of the Ironbounds

Not sure what mountain stu is supposed to know - but if I'm on the right track that should be the Provis Hills close in.
And then Mt Louisa and the Ray Range running along the left side.

Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Tue 08 Sep, 2009 10:17 pm

Spot on!
Stu knows about the provis. we've had a few discussions about the ludicrous fact PROVIS HILLS only gets 1 point for a walk that take roughly 7-10 days

Preciptious Bluff is still to date my favourite mtn. the very obscure clue was the capitals in my phrase P eak B aggers would know this one... PB... yes yes not much of a clue I know. But PB is also worth 9pts.......
