Any update on road / bridge repairs?
Fri 05 Dec, 2014 2:00 pm
No change in regards to the bridges Eggs. Was in there a few weeks back. The alternative access road further around was pretty sloppy as well, but things haven't been that wet here recently so it may now have dried a little. Had no problems getting right to the start of the Meander Falls track before last winter in a 4WD with decent clearance. The road up to the busted bridge on Mother Cummings Rivulet was in pretty good condition though

In the Examiner yesterday Parks and Wildlife anticipate the two bridges to be completed by December 2015.

The bridges will be constructed with cement. So hopefully they last

Concrete would be better.

Hi . My friend and I went up to Meander Falls in the snow , driving to the old carpark. The route we took to drive in is on my blog
http://natureloverswalks.blogspot.com.a ... -2015.htmlIt was very muddy, and 4WD drive only, but fine for that. Pics of the road and of the falls in the blog.

Compliments of the Tas parks waste book page
Construction begins on Meander Falls Road bridge replacement
Work will begin on the Meander Falls Road bridges replacement project on 19 October 2015. Construction will be highly dependent on weather and river levels, but it is anticipated that works will be completed over a 4-6 week period.
During construction Meander Falls Road will be closed to the public past the intersection with Scotts Road. As a result there will be no access to Smoko Road or the walking tracks starting on this road including Stone Hut, Ironstone and Mother Cummings Peak tracks. Access will be available to emergency vehicles if required.
Visitors should contact PWS staff on 6777 2179 to check the status of Smoko Road prior to visiting, to avoid disappointment.

Thanks for this info Naturelover.. It makes a whole lot of difference to actually see the intersections involved and the state of the road! This stuff can be make or break for a lot of people. You have done us a good service!

Now.. thinking laterally.. Why spent umpty hundreds of thousands of dollars on two expensive bridges, when for about a sixth of that money, you could get some trucks to lay logging road base in on the alternative access road bad section, and crown it proof roll it, and voila.. you have a new good access! Good for 2wd as well.
Just thinking.

Yes, you're thinking, but they're NOT. Do they ever??

Wouldn't give access to arguably the best walk in the reserve - Stone hut - Bastion Cascades and The Dell circuit. doing up the temporary road and replacing one bridge might have done the job. Perhaps more costly.

Anybody been up the Meander Falls recently? A mate and I (and our better halves) are planning on walking up to the Falls next week; are they actually still flowing over, given the rather dry spring we've had?
Rumour has it 2WD access to the trail head is still possible via a logging road in the area?
Cheers, Ben.

Can confirm the Spur 2 temporary road is passable by 2WD vehicles if you're careful... bumpy and rocky in sections but bone-dry.
However the point is moot 'cause the bridges were opened to traffic on Friday (apparently there's still a little work to be done on them).

Yeah, those approach/departure ramps are as steep as they look. Don't think the new bridges will be washed away in a hurry

PWS staff were there replacing signage at the trailhead yesterday afternoon too. Looks like it'll be business as usual again.
Cheers, Ben.

Great - thanks for the update, Ben.

Fancy bit of bridgework. Can think of a few others that could do with that sort of thing.

Does anyone know if the bridge work has now been completed?
Sat 09 Jan, 2016 12:44 pm
Hi, both bridges open and road is driveable.
Went for a sticky-beak this morning...
Some minor gravel work to be completed. New signage looks good.
