I feel a bit responsible for igniting a brush fire, but, if we are to evolve we need to meld/weld seemingly disparate and incompatible views.
So, a bit of oil and water will always start a fire, and we need to be able to have a civil debate, one which will enable the revival of many country towns. I see that unemployment was mentioned, and unless there is sufficient economic activity in the provincial centre, the economic migration will only serve to weigh on the next biggest centre.
Why is it, that we cannot have a discussion without some calling "bogan" or "greenie" and why is the debate always conflated with the inured hatred that only bigotry can muster?

Anyway, I will shut up, and hopefully the etheric spasms will subsidea.

I think the term 'hatred' is a bit Rich al? In fact even suggesting anyone has even lent support to old growth logging here is incorrect.
Serves some sort of purpose in some minds I guess, is a Positive!?

Now I know why I disdain "higher education" and the self imposed limits that such an insular moderated system impose. "Educated fools..." <is THAT difficult to understand...?!

Cannot distain "Higher Education" without which you would have no Educators ,Doctors et al me thinks ?
As for Personal higher education, for financial reasons I needed to leave school at 15 and get a job and worked for 50 years till retirement (partially self funded ) so I am what is termed "self educated" and when I was given a Thesaurus and discovered Poetry at the age of 18 I got hooked on words.
I hope I have answered your query and that I have angled my reply in a not pointed manner and heaven forbid that it is lacking in sensitivity or mental alertness

I'm going to throw in a curly one ..If (remember IF) Tassie was on the mainland would there be the same attitude/discussion/apathy as now ?....eg If it was on the coast of Qld next to the reef would there still be the same old arguments for & against felling etc ? ..............this post is comma free to appease the anti-commarists........

Yes, trolling! Iv'e covered everything that could have been a possibility and may have caused your earlier grief (and led to you 'attacking' me and Corvus (who can type for himself)) but you still haven't joined the topic. I still have no idea what you were on about. You'll have to accept that I 'hate' nobody. I find this all a bit precious seeing as how you seem to have such an otherwise good grasp on AU issues to the point of deriding some section of the community? Bagels, they don't smell do they? Anyhow, no, my grandfather was Jewish and i've apologised. Was there other purpose?

River siltation and log jams on the Nile were other tangible effects.

The log jam on the Nile was not in any way whatsoever created by forestry operations. You can argue that forestry has contributed to increased erosion upstream of the jam which in turn has contributed to the size of it. However that logjam is there due to the width, gradient, flow of the river and also the presence of willows on the river bank at that location, and it has been there since before the commencement of any large scale logging in the region.
I'm not trying to be picky, just correcting a minor fact in this discussion.

These kind of arguments are going on (with passion) all over the nation, with logging, mining and gas extraction, urban development, and other issues with land management being the centre of attention. As seen recently with mining and gas extraction in particular, traditional political alliances have become convoluted, with The Greens taking votes from the Nationals in some rural regions, particularly in NSW where farmers and "greenies" have been joining forces in "lock the gate" campaigns. Logging is still a conservation battle ground in Victoria's mountain ash forests, where the state's faunal emblem, the Leadbeater's possum, is under serious threat from continued logging in its habitat for paper production. Queensland has had its fair share of these issues too, such as mining and gas extraction in the Darling Downs region and central Qld, logging and cattle grazing in National Parks, renewed broadscale vegetation clearing brought in by the previous state government (that lasted only one term, partly because of some of these issues), management of the Reef, etc... And the other states as well, and these issues are just tip of the iceberg. Of course with all these issues comes plenty of ignorance, and worse (in my book), apathy. I think though, that of all the states, Tassie is the most polarised when it comes to environmental issues. It seems to me that, for better or worse, almost everyone takes a side on the issues.

As I see it (for what it's worth) there are a lot more issues to this environmental problem,it's just not a matter of do not stand on a plant or cut down a hundred year old tree.......one of the big problems is that 5 lettered monster called money....the capitalist multi nationals want more & more of it & will gladly strip every tree,every mineral & proportionly put little back, when there is nothing left they just up stakes & move somewhere else......then there is the tourist & hospitality industries who drag as many tourists in as possible & want to put up casinos,theme parks,maccas etc & also put little back in proportionly.........then there is food growing industry,the jury is still out as to the long term effect that will have on the environment especialy salmon farming down south........then there are the politicians forever with their snouts in the trough crying poor,not enough money to put into parks........then there is at the end of the chain the people who just want jobs jobs at any cost (who can blame them?)..........I think all the interests need to come together somehow & sort it all out & look past there own agendas......we all are custodians of this wonder ful land & cannot stuff it up for future generations............the clock really is ticking.......... ...........only4 commas didn,t I do well

The point is that several bw areas are accessed via state forest rd, access is being restricted. Priority is low unless its a major tourist venue. Not many bushwalking pollies unfortunately! But if there are any perhaps they can help.
