This particular hut is used by a lot of climbers summiting Mt Blanc.
[Those that haven't died in the adjacent "gully of death"]
It sits above a lower hut which, in turn, sits above a restaurant overlooking the glacier. The restaurant is reached via a railway line.

Thanks eggs, well hopefully not all of them die in the "gully of death". It looks like the refuge is currently closed and they don't allow camping or bivouacing on Mont Blanc.

USA, a bit different but hopefully enough visual clues:

I think you might be heading down into Grand Canyon, South Rim. Do I need to name specific places/trails?

Correct Graham, I'm descending Bright Angel Trail - but your answer is what I was looking for.
The protocol for passing a mule train is to wait on the inside of the trail, standing still and quiet until the wrangler advises that you can continue hiking.
This was the second half of the train that went past.

Thanks John. I've walked down (and up) at least part of that trail but we weren't lucky enough to see the mules on it.

This is also in USA but sadly climbing on it was not allowed. What's it called and/or where is it. (The name is the same.)

Yes it is. Sorry I didn't confirm earlier but you know how it is when you get caught up at work.

We will stay in the USA - which short but steep popular tourist trail have I just finished.

In the interests of a quick game that's a good game

This canyon is in Utah, but I don't want to put a Hoodoo on it ...

Certainly is, the start / end of the Navajo trail. Bryce Canyon is an amazing place.

Hint: We're moving through the country, but we're actually not walking...

I'm guessing its in the low countries, Holland or Belgium. they love their brick buildings...
I cant read the sign above the door. so no clue there.

Not Holland or Belgium, but it is in a flat area of a country to the south of those countries.

Not Luxembourg, not cycling, but cycling is a definite option on this route. In fact we had a cycle each with us so that we could explore. We also saw many cyclists along the way.

This would be one of the most relaxing ways of traveling through the European countryside.

It seems this might be in the Bordeaux region. Maybe you were on a wine tour.

Re: Game: Where-is-it? (international)

Thu 13 Aug, 2015 10:10 pm

Getting closer now. Yes, in rural France.

Not actually in the Bordeaux, Bourgogne (Burgundy). At one point we were within shooting distance of Chablis but couldn't get a ride there for a day so had to buy some local wine instead. Terrible! :D

Not a wine tour, this was a self-organised holiday and we had the freedom to move or stay if we liked the area we were in, no issue with accommodation but we were not camping or car camping. We did visit some local Caves (wine cellars) though. Entertaining to sample the wine and converse with the winemaker in broken schoolboy french.

Canal boat, could that be a lock keepers house?

Re: Game: Where-is-it? (international)

Thu 13 Aug, 2015 11:42 pm

Yes it is, well caught.

We're on a self drive canal boat and that is a lock keeper's house. Unfortunately they are not occupied by lock keepers so much these days, the lock keepers manage multiple locks so they scoot around between locks on motorbikes mostly. Great family holiday, you have the opportunity to dine out at any town you arrive at, or just buy some supplies and have a private dinner in some tranquil location on the river.

Over to you norts.

Thanks Photohiker
This one is a photo opportunity that not many AT hikers miss out on, probably only the acrophobics.
Mine is a bit boring , but some ppl get very creative.

Looks like there is a spot where a track goes down to the cliff line around the 1400m mark below Winteregg.
The deep gorge is Trummelbach Falls - hidden inside the mountain.
At the back are the Eiger, Monk & Jungfrau.
However you might be off track at the head of one of the big waterfalls along that side?
