GOOD IDEAS FOR MULTI-DAY ADVENTURES

Postby damon_james » Wed 19 Aug, 2015 12:27 am

I am in Tas from around Thu 17 Dec until Wed 23 Dec.

This year I completed the SCT and the Western Arthurs full traverse, which hurt (...but the pain, oh so good :D) Also done the Overland a few years back, which was a nice stroll. Besides Freycinet I've not walked anywhere else in Tas. BTW here's a fave pic of me holding my breath on the Beggary Bumps in April:

I have subscribed to the TasParks Three Capes email booking alert thingo, but I doubt my chances of successfully booking at Xmas, and to be frank I prefer difficult isolated walks to boardwalking, despite my questionable fitness and propensity to dawdle. I like a challenge. Don't know if the Eastern Arthurs are too hard. I'm undecided but I might still do the Three Capes if it's open, just because...

Calling all suggestions for a highly adventurous 5n/6day or 6n/7day walk or walk combination (i.e 2x walks back to back).

And if you want to come, let me know :)

Well that looks rather dangerous.

Frenchman's Cap might be a good stroll for you, although you might like to continue down to the Franklin and then bash out to the highway if you're not so keen on Boardwalk.

There's not much in the way of boardwalk at Frenchmans. It will be very crowded there I would think.

Eastern Arthurs are a little harder than the Western Arthurs, but it is shorter, with only a couple a spots that are Beggary-esq.

The Southern Range traverse sounds like a good option for you.

You know, I've seen a few photos of traverses like that on the Beggaries, but never had to do them when I went through. Did I find an easier bypass, or are you guys just thrillseekers?

Frenchmans would be a good option if you get some maps and knock off all the Abels and other pointed peaks. You could even try to connect Agamemnon & Philps with Barron Pass by climbing down over the White Needle if You really need a challenge. And then out via St Marys Plain to Victoria Pass. Or the Southern Ranges. If you want to make it really hard, you can add Bisdee and Vanishing Falls.

There's a lot more boardwalk than there used to be... But nothing like the OLT.

A trip as suggested by NNW might be a good idea. Philps peak views are excellent in good weather.

How about the trip from Bathurst Habour by Boat then drop off on the North Eastern shore then cross country via Harrys Bluff, Mt Castor and Geeves Bluff to Federation peak - would be a little longer than 7 days but would be challenging and interesting trip.

The trip from Frenchmans across the Franklin and up to Victoria Pass is on my list as well and would be a nice challenge.

I was thinking the same thing. I remember the beggaries as being tiring (we called them the "buggary bumps" and I heard that was initially suggested to the nomenclature board, who wouldn't have it), but not scary - at least not as scary as that photo makes it look. Doesn't look familiar at all. Maybe I did it in my sleep? :-) Or maybe, as you suggested we went the wrong/easy way?

I don't recall any brown trouser moments in the Buggaries (or anything like in that photo)....... And I'm pretty sure I was awake, except for the moment I followed a well formed pad off in the wrong direction for half an hour :D

Many thanks all for your suggestions. Much appreciated.
I think I'll take a look at the Frenchman's / Franklin option or Southern Ranges.
I'll see what HRH John Chapman (man with a broken watch) says too.
The photo was a genuine surprise. It was taken by my walking buddy. We were on track (as far as we could tell ;) )
As you said pazzar, this part of the traverse wasn't as scary as the photo makes it look - but the photo makes it look *&%$#! scary. I saw a pic just like it when preparing for the W Arthurs. The thought of that pic scared me at night for 6 months in advance. Must be part of the reason I'm so happy about this one (hehe!)
Having said that, there were about half a dozen potential life changing moments elsewhere on the WA's that I will not forget.
